The role.
We are looking to recruit a Senior Community Services Assistant at The Campus, Weston-super-Mare. The Campus is a multi-use building located in the heart of Locking Castle, Weston-super-Mare. You will deliver a range of services from sports and leisure to library and conferences/meeting spaces to a wide variety of users and customers, over several North Somerset community venues.
Working as part of a team, your hours will be worked on a shift basis to include regular evenings and weekends. The successful applicant will act as the Senior member of the assistant team and will focus on front line service delivery. The successful candidate will have significant experience of working in a busy customer facing environment and be able to balance work demands within a multi-disciplined environment.
In this role, you will, under the general direction of the Community Services Team Leader, ensure the safe, efficient and effective operation of the community facilities at The Campus, Weston-super-Mare.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead the day-to-day operation of community facilities, acting as Duty Officer and ensuring a safe, welcoming, and efficient service in the absence of senior managers.
- Supervise and support the Community Services Assistants, assisting with recruitment, training and day-to-day tasks.
- Help to develop and deliver an inclusive programme of community activities and services, helping to maximise participation and ensure facilities meet the needs of a wide range of users.
- Manage bookings, customer enquiries, payments, cash handling, and record-keeping, ensuring compliance with Council procedures and delivering excellent customer service, including library and information services.
- Promote and maintain high-quality facilities, supporting marketing activities, preparing venues and equipment for use, ensuring health and safety compliance, and securing the premises when required.
This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
This position is currently based at The Campus in Weston-super-Mare.
Work style.
At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.
This role falls into the category of Fixed Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:
- Four days in the office.
- Spends most or all of their time in the office, due to nature of the work but can be for reasons such as unsuitable home working conditions or a desire for separation of home and work life.
- The office remains a shared space with cultural encouragement for clear desk policies.
About you.
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about customer and community services and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria:
- Minimum of NVQ / EDI level 2 or equivalent, including English and maths (Equivalent to 4 GCSE passes at grade 9 to 4 including Maths and English).
- Significant experience of working in a customer facing environment and the front-line delivery of public services.
- Experience of working in a multi discipline environment and a working knowledge of the services available within the council and partner agencies.
- Strong knowledge of the local area and knowledge of library materials, operations and offers.
- Computer literate with good keyboard skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office packages.
- Confident telephone manner and in dealing with individuals and groups on a face-to-face basis.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to undertake multi discipline tasks and adapt to working demands quickly.
- Able to demonstrate courtesy, patience, diplomacy and tact in dealing with customers and colleagues and be a confident decision maker in the absence of the Team Leader or other senior staff.
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of staff supervision and knowledge of health and safety at work.
- Experience of Library, Leisure and other front line local authority services.
- Experience of working in the hospitality industry.
- Good general & local knowledge and awareness of current affairs, including those specific to local authorities and related industry.
- Familiarity with library specific software and bookings systems.
