Full job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join the National and Specialist CAMHS OCD, BDD and Related Disorders Service. They are seeking to recruit a permanent, part time (0.4 WTE) Parent Peer Support Worker. This service is nationally and internationally renowned in the field of paediatric OCD, BDD and related disorders and is at the forefront of research and clinical practice developments.

The service provides specialist assessment and treatment for children with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), BDD (body dysmorphic disorder), and related disorders. We are a large, busy and friendly service and look forward to welcoming a Parent Peer Support Worker to our team.

The Parent Peer Support Worker will use their lived experience of parenting a young person with OCD or BDD to support families accessing the service and inspire hope that recovery is possible. The role will include speaking with families who are hoping to access the service, providing a listening and empathic ear to families on the waiting list, supporting adherence to our treatment protocol and potentially joining group interventions as an expert-by-experience”. The post-holder will work closely with other senior and experienced Clinical Psychologists on the team, a part-time Consultant Psychiatrist, as well as trainees from a variety of disciplines. The post-holder will work in all aspects of the service, clinical, research and service development.

The post holder will use their experience to provide support to families accessing the service at all stages (including enquiry calls, supporting families whilst on the waiting list and at point of discharge) and inspire hope for recovery. The post-holder will also be expected to support adherence to our treatment protocol and potentially contribute to a parent group as an expert-by-experience. They will act as a ‘parent consultant’ for the team and use their experience to advocate for the family perspective. The successful applicant will be offered regular supervision and will receive training and support from the SLAM Peer Support Worker network.

About Us:
The National and Specialist OCD, BDD & Related Disorders team is currently based at the Michael Rutter Centre, Maudsley Hospital. It is a large and growing, busy and very friendly service. The team is made up of largely clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and excellent administrative support. The service is much in demand with a growing number of referrals. There is regular individual supervision, team case discussions and a Reflective Practice group to ensure that everyone feels well supported. There is an emphasis on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and research/audit is strongly supported as part of the multi-disciplinary team approach.

As one of the few Trusts in London we are proud to offer flexible working as part of our new ways of working, and we are happy to talk flexible working at the interview stage. In this role, you will be able to work Monday to Friday in the time frames from 8:30 to 6:30, giving you the very best of good work life balance. (This may include working early mornings, later evenings or Saturdays as part of the core working hours/working pattern for this post)

The main role of the Parent Peer Support worker is to use their own and other examples of lived experience to inspire hope that recovery is possible. The Parent Peer Support worker will also provide an invaluable contribution through acting as a ‘parent consultant’ regarding service developments and support feedback from the Parent Forum to the rest of the team. Key skills will be to provide empathy, understanding and hope.
