Role Purpose
The Night Shift Supervisor will take full ownership of the warehouse operation during the night shift, ensuring that inventory, picking, loading and all related processes run accurately, safely and on time. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced warehouse professional who can manage a team independently overnight, drive shift performance and results, make sound decisions without direct supervision, and hand over a clean, accurate and fully prepared operation to the day team each morning.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Warehouse Manager and act as the main point of accountability for people, process and performance on site throughout the night shift.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Management
- Oversee stock accuracy throughout the night shift, including goods received, put-away and stock movements.
- Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies, shortages or damaged products, escalating where necessary.
- Ensure products are stored correctly, clearly labelled and warehouse space is used efficiently.
- Support stock counts and ensure any discrepancies are recorded and corrected.
- Ensure PDA scanners and warehouse systems are used correctly and consistently by the night team.
Picking
- Organise and supervise the picking of customer orders to ensure accuracy and completeness within required deadlines.
- Monitor picking quality, order accuracy and productivity, addressing errors as they arise.
- Allocate picking tasks fairly according to operational priorities and order volumes.
Loading and Dispatch
- Coordinate and supervise loading activities, ensuring vehicles are loaded correctly, safely and on schedule.
- Check the quality, stability and correct labelling of pallets before dispatch.
- Ensure vehicles are prepared and ready to depart within agreed time windows.
- Liaise with Transport to confirm loading plans, driver arrivals and any last-minute changes.
Night Shift Operations
- Take ownership of all warehouse processes during the night shift, ensuring continuity between shifts.
- Organise daily workloads and allocate tasks according to operational priorities.
- Communicate proactively with the outgoing/incoming shift and the Warehouse Manager to ensure a smooth handover.
- Anticipate and resolve operational issues (staff shortages, equipment failures, late deliveries) without waiting for day-shift direction, escalating serious issues promptly.
Team Management and Leadership
- Lead, supervise and motivate the night shift warehouse team, acting as the senior point of contact on site overnight.
- Plan and allocate staff and duties according to volumes, priorities and individual capabilities.
- Communicate clearly on daily targets, priorities and operational changes at the start of each shift.
- Provide practical guidance, coaching and on-the-job training to new and existing team members.
- Monitor individual and team performance, giving regular feedback and recognising good performance.
- Ensure employees follow company procedures and instructions from management.
- Address poor performance, misconduct, lateness or attendance issues promptly and fairly, escalating to the Warehouse Manager and HR when necessary.
- Encourage teamwork, accountability and a professional working environment throughout the shift.
- Identify staffing and training needs and support recruitment and workforce planning for the night team.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe, clean and organised warehouse throughout the night shift.
- Ensure all team members follow health and safety requirements and manual-handling procedures.
- Conduct or coordinate safety and housekeeping checks during the shift.
- Ensure emergency exits, walkways and working areas remain clear.
- Report and help investigate accidents, incidents, damages and near misses.
- Support compliance with food safety, hygiene, traceability and stock-rotation requirements, including correct handling of chilled and frozen goods.
Results Management and Reporting
- Own the night shift's results, taking responsibility for output, accuracy and on-time completion.
- Monitor key shift KPIs, including picking accuracy, productivity, on-time loading, damages and stock discrepancies.
- Report shift results, incidents and outstanding issues to the Warehouse Manager at the end of each shift.
- Identify the root causes of recurring problems and implement corrective actions to improve results.
- Identify and drive opportunities to improve productivity, accuracy, safety and warehouse organisation.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure required forms and checklists are completed to support performance tracking.
Essential Experience and Requirements
- Proven experience in a warehouse supervisory role, ideally including night shift operations.
- Demonstrated experience managing and getting results from a team in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Strong practical warehouse knowledge, including:
- Picking and order preparation
- Loading and unloading vehicles
- Stock control, replenishment and stock rotation
- Use of PDA scanners or handheld warehouse devices
- Warehouse management or stock-control systems
- Experience managing or supervising a team, ideally in a fast-paced, food/perishable-goods environment.
- Good understanding of warehouse health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions without direct supervision.
- Comfortable monitoring performance data and KPIs and acting on them.
- Good level of spoken and written English.
- Basic computer skills, including email and warehouse systems.
- Flexible and reliable, with the ability to work night shift hours consistently.
- Forklift licence or relevant warehouse-equipment certification would be advantageous.

The Night Shift Supervisor will be expected to ensure:
- The night team is properly organised, supervised and supported throughout the shift.
- Orders are picked accurately and dispatched on time.
- Pallets are built and loaded safely, correctly and to the required standard.
- Stock discrepancies, damages and picking errors are kept to a minimum.
- Team performance is actively managed, with feedback given and issues addressed promptly.
- Health, safety, food-safety and company procedures are consistently followed.
- Operational problems are resolved promptly, with ownership, and communicated appropriately.
- The warehouse remains clean, safe, efficient and well organised at the end of every shift.
