Job Purpose
The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) will support the delivery of high-quality education, personal development and pastoral support for young people accessing Dale Futures.
Working within an Alternative Provision setting, the HLTA will provide targeted support for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), SEND and barriers to accessing mainstream education.
The post holder will work closely with teaching staff to support academic progress, deliver interventions, contribute to the PSHE and personal development curriculum, and help create a safe, inclusive and relational environment where every young person has the opportunity to succeed.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupporting Teaching and Learning
- Support teachers in delivering engaging, personalised and ambitious learning activities.
- Work with individuals and small groups to support academic progress.
- Deliver planned interventions and learning activities under the direction of teaching staff.
- Support literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum development.
- Adapt learning activities to meet individual pupil needs.
- Encourage independence, confidence and positive attitudes towards learning.
- Provide feedback to teachers regarding pupil progress, engagement and barriers to learning.
PSHE and Personal Development Delivery
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of Dale Futures’ PSHE and personal development curriculum.
Responsibilities include:
- Deliver planned PSHE sessions that support pupils’ personal, social and emotional development.
- Support pupils to develop skills and knowledge around:
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing
- Healthy relationships
- Respect, equality and diversity
- Online safety
- Consent and personal boundaries
- Safeguarding awareness
- Resilience and coping strategies
- Careers, aspirations and preparation for adulthood
- Life skills and independence
- Create a safe and supportive environment where pupils can discuss sensitive issues appropriately.
- Adapt PSHE delivery to meet the needs of pupils with SEMH and SEND needs.
- Support pupils to develop confidence, self-awareness and positive decision-making.
- Contribute to enrichment activities and wider personal development opportunities.
SEMH and Pastoral Support
- Build positive, trusting relationships with young people.
- Use trauma-informed and relational approaches to support engagement.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour strategies.
- Understand individual barriers to learning and contribute to support plans.
- Encourage pupils to develop resilience, independence and confidence.
Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people.
- Follow Dale Futures safeguarding procedures and professional expectations.
- Recognise and report safeguarding concerns promptly.
- Contribute to risk assessments, pupil support plans and safeguarding discussions.
- Maintain professional curiosity regarding pupil welfare and vulnerability.
- Work collaboratively with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and wider team.
Behaviour and Inclusion
- Promote positive behaviour and high expectations.
- Support pupils to understand boundaries, routines and expectations.
- Use restorative and relational approaches to support behaviour.
- Contribute to creating a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Support pupils during periods of dysregulation or challenge.
Assessment and Progress
- Contribute to monitoring pupil progress and engagement.
- Record intervention outcomes and pupil development.
- Provide feedback to teachers and leaders.
- Participate in pupil reviews and multi-agency meetings where appropriate.
Admissions, Transition and Wider Responsibilities
- Support pupil induction and transition into Dale Futures.
- Assist with gathering information about pupil needs and strengths.
- Contribute to placement reviews and reintegration planning.
- Support enrichment activities, trips and vocational opportunities.
- Participate in staff meetings, training and professional development.
Person SpecificationEssentialQualifications and Experience
- HLTA qualification or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with children and young people.
- Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, SEND or additional needs.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
- Experience delivering interventions or supporting learning.
