Overview
We are looking for a hardworking, experienced and ambitious person to join our team farming in the Cotswolds. We are an organic dairy farm milking approx. 180 cows split between Spring and Autumn block calving. We have an artisan cheese maker located onsite that is producing internationally recognised cheese exclusively from our milk. The cheese has won best cheese in Britain and Ireland twice in the last 3 years and is being enjoyed by customers in Los Angeles to Japan. We have a small self-service farm shop in the village and also supply milk to local cafes in the area. The farm employs an adaptive grazing system which is aimed at maximising milk from forage as much as possible. Most of the farm is in diverse herbal leys alongside lucerne and chicory (which is used as a summer buffer crop). You would be joining a young and enthusiastic team, all of us being under 35 years old. We are constantly making infrastructure and system improvements and welcome suggestions and thoughts to progress the business. We can provide/source accommodation depending on the applicant.
Duties
- Carry out daily herd management, including milking, feeding, scraping and bedding up in the winter, youngstock management and health monitoring of all cattle.
- Be prepared to manage and oversee other members of staff in the team.
- Assist with grazing management and grazing/silage decisions.
- Assist with breeding decisions and the serving of cycling cows. (AI training can be offered).
- Assist in developing and implementing herd health plans and maintaining accurate records of animal health, breeding, and production data ensuring compliance with organic standards.
- Operate and conduct routine maintenance on farm equipment and machinery.
- Be prepared to work every other Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. (the rota is 11 days on and 3 days off - with 31 paid leave days a year provided)
Skills
- Proven experience working with dairy cattle (all aspects).
- Proven experience operating farm machinery to share the variety of tasks throughout the winter (feeding, bedding, scraping etc).
- Knowledge of animal care best practices including health monitoring and disease prevention.
- Excellent communication skills for team collaboration and management.
- Hardworking, ambitious and willing to advance in dairy farming.
- Courses can be offered for any areas that interest the applicant.
