About the Role
Railway Support Services Ltd (RSS) is looking to recruit an experienced HGV Class 1 Driver to join our team, with specific experience in the transportation of railway rolling stock, locomotives and associated rail equipment.
This is a specialist driving role and we are particularly interested in candidates who have previously worked within the railway, heavy haulage or specialist transport sectors and understand the additional requirements involved in moving rail vehicles safely by road.
The role will involve transporting locomotives, rail vehicles and other railway equipment to and from customer sites, rail depots, engineering facilities and operational railway locations throughout the UK.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- transporting railway locomotives, rolling stock and associated equipment throughout the UK;
- operating HGV tractor units with specialist trailers, including low-loader and heavy-haulage equipment where applicable;
- assisting with the safe loading, securing and unloading of railway rolling stock;
- carrying out appropriate vehicle, trailer and load checks before departure;
- ensuring loads are correctly restrained and transported in accordance with applicable road transport and load-security requirements;
- working with RSS personnel and customers when positioning vehicles for loading and unloading;
- completing all required driver, vehicle and transport documentation;
- maintaining high standards of vehicle care and reporting defects promptly;
- complying with Drivers' Hours, Working Time and company safety requirements; and
- representing RSS professionally when attending customer and railway sites.
Experience and Qualifications
Essential:
- Category C+E / HGV Class 1 driving licence;
- valid Digital Tachograph Card;
- previous experience transporting railway rolling stock, locomotives or rail vehicles;
- experience operating specialist or low-loader trailers;
- good knowledge of load restraint and securing heavy or unusual loads;
- ability to carry out vehicle and trailer safety checks;
- willingness to travel throughout the UK; and
- a professional and safety-conscious approach to work.
Desirable:
- previous employment within the railway or specialist heavy-haulage sector;
- experience transporting locomotives, shunting locomotives, rail plant or similar heavy railway vehicles;
- experience with abnormal or specialist loads;
- experience working at railway depots, terminals or engineering facilities;
- knowledge of abnormal-load movement requirements; and
- relevant railway competencies or site-access qualifications.
Working Arrangements
Due to the nature of railway and specialist transport operations, this position will involve travel throughout the UK.
Applicants should therefore be prepared for early starts, late finishes, occasional weekend or night working and nights away from home where operational requirements dictate.
The role requires a flexible approach, as some movements will be planned around customer requirements, railway possessions, engineering works and site access arrangements.
