Full job description

Department

Legal Services, including the Information Governance and Insurance Office, sits within the University Secretary's Office and forms part of Professional Services at the University of York. We are a small, friendly and supportive team comprising five lawyers and a Legal Services Co-ordinator.

Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative legal team supporting a leading UK university. The role offers exposure to a diverse range of legal matters arising from teaching, research, innovation and international collaboration, providing an excellent opportunity to develop your legal expertise within the Higher Education sector. We welcome applications from candidates who may not have previous Higher Education experience but are keen to learn and develop in a varied in-house legal environment

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Qualification & Experience: Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive (or equivalent level experience) with post-qualification experience in commercial or contract law. (Experience within the Higher Education sector is not required).
Legal Expertise: Practical experience in contract law, with the ability to draft, review, and negotiate standard commercial agreements, including NDAs, MOUs, student placement agreements, and service contracts.
Research & Analysis: Excellent legal research skills with the ability to analyse complex information, identify legal risks, and provide clear, practical advice.
Communication & Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an enthusiastic, proactive approach to learning and working collaboratively within a supportive team environment.
Specialist Areas (Desirable/Learning Focus): An interest in developing expertise in intellectual property, licensing, commercialisation, procurement, or international educational partnerships.
