Full job description

We are looking for friendly volunteers to welcome those who come to donate items in our Donation Centre which accept donations from members of the public 7 days a week. From here they are sorted, priced and shipped out for sale in our 15 shops.

When am I needed?

The Donation Centre is open Monday – Saturday 9am – 4:30pm and 10am – 4pm on a Sunday and cannot function without volunteer support.

We offer three standard shifts each day:

8:45am – 12:15pm
11:00am – 2:00pm
1:00pm – 4:45pm
Sunday 9:45am - 1pm
Sunday 1pm - 4:15pm

We can also accommodate alternative shift times, provided these are at least 2 hours long. Weekly or fortnightly commitments are preferred.

What will I be doing?

Greeting and thanking donors, making them feel valued
Accepting donations from the public, advising on what can be donated, and promoting the Gift Aid scheme
Moving donations to the holding point in the shop
Working alongside staff and other volunteers in the warehouse in Clifton Moor, York
Assisting with sorting donations if the door is quiet

What skills and qualities will I need?

Be friendly and confident and enjoy engaging with people
Be able to work under the instruction of the managers and work as part of a team of volunteers
Be able to deal with enquiries from the general public
Have a positive attitude
Demonstrate good attention to detail
Have a willingness to learn new skills – no experience necessary
Be able to maintain confidentiality

Support and Supervision

Volunteers will be supervised by the Donation Centre managers, supported by the St Leonard’s Hospice Retail Team, who together will provide you with general training and liaise closely with you over all aspects of your role.

The Volunteer Services Team will help guide you through the application and induction process and be your point of contact for general enquiries about volunteering.

Training

Volunteers are required to complete mandatory training modules which are usually delivered via our online platform. Additional, booster and refresher training may be delivered as needed via e-learning, video links or face to face. You may also be invited to attend role specific in person meetings where appropriate.
