Job Summary
The Import Clearance Officer is responsible for managing the customs clearance process for all imported goods into the UK, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations and supporting the smooth movement of stock into the business.
*The successful candidate must be fully trained and experienced in using the CSS-UK customs clearance system and be confident in independently preparing and submitting UK customs declarations.*
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end customs clearance process for all UK import shipments.
- Prepare, complete, and submit import customs declarations using the CSS-UK customs clearance system.
- Ensure full compliance with HMRC customs regulations and UK import legislation.
- Review and verify all import documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, airway bills, and certificates of origin.
- Classify goods using the correct commodity codes and customs procedures.
- Calculate and verify import duties, VAT, and other applicable charges.
- Liaise with freight forwarders, customs authorities, shipping agents, and suppliers to resolve customs queries and clearance issues.
- Monitor customs entries and ensure shipments are cleared without unnecessary delays.
- Maintain accurate customs records and supporting documentation for audit purposes.
- Work closely with the Warehouse, Procurement, and Operations teams to coordinate inbound deliveries.
- Identify opportunities to improve customs processes and operational efficiency.
- Keep up to date with changes in UK customs legislation and import requirements.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in a UK Import Clearance or Customs Clearance role.
- Fully trained and proficient in the CSS-UK customs clearance system (essential).
- Experience preparing and submitting UK customs declarations independently.
- Strong knowledge of HMRC customs procedures and UK import regulations.
- Excellent understanding of commodity codes, customs valuation, Rules of Origin, and Incoterms.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent administrative skills.
- Ability to manage multiple import shipments in a fast-paced distribution environment.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
Desirable
- Experience within the vaping, FMCG, wholesale, or distribution sectors.
- Knowledge of excise and duty-related import procedures.
- Experience working with freight forwarding and logistics providers.
- Understanding of bonded warehouse operations.
