Purpose of the Role
The PBS Team Leader provides clinical and operational leadership to a dedicated team involved in complex cases to ensure proactive, person-centered care that reduces the need for restrictive practices and is part of a company-wide initiative to standardize evidence-led, positive, and proactive practice. You will bridge the gap between high-level behavioral strategy and hands-on implementation, ensuring that service users receive proactive, person-centered care that reduces the need for restrictive practices. You are responsible for the fidelity of PBS plans, staff development, and the successful transition of new individuals into the service.
Key Responsibilities
The PBS Team Leader responsibilities include but are not limited to the following;
Team Leadership & Clinical Oversight
- Direct Practice Oversight: Demonstrating excellence by working alongside Support Workers to champion active support and increase individual autonomy.
- Staff Mentorship: Lead, supervise, and coach PBS Support Workers in the implementation of proactive and reactive strategies.
- Fidelity Monitoring: Ensure PBS plans are followed with high fidelity, performing regular observations and audits of ABC charts and behavioral data.
- Debrief Leadership: Facilitate post-incident reviews to identify learning opportunities,
- environmental triggers, and required plan adjustments.
- Formal Supervision & Appraisal: Conduct regular formal supervision and annual appraisals for PBS Support Workers.
- Resource Allocation: Oversee staff rotas to ensure adequate staff numbers and appropriate skill mix are maintained for service user needs and a conducive home/work life balance.
- Training Delivery: Coordinate specialist training sessions for staff teams, focusing on de-escalation, low-arousal strategies, and trauma-informed practice. This includes facilitating tailored service inductions as part of workforce management. Collaborate with the PBS team to deliver bespoke training based on client needs.
Referral, Assessment & Transition
- Initial Assessments: Support and contribute to initial referral meetings with families, carers, and professionals to gather background information and understand behavioral presentation in collaboration with an Operations representative.
- Data Collection: Oversee the incoming data trends via internal care planning system, their review, analysis and interpretation to be presented regularly.
- Formulation Support: Assist the PBS Practitioner and Head of PBS in completing Functional Behaviour Assessments, Formulations and Psychosocial assessments.
- Care Plan Management: Maintain all support plan and care records in accordance with service policy, performing regular audits to ensure compliance and person-centered delivery.
- Onboarding Oversight: Manage the "stabilization phase" for new transitions, providing increased in-service support, direct observations, and staff coaching during the first month.
Professional Collaboration
- Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Working: Collaborate with social workers, psychiatrists, OTs, and speech and language therapists to ensure holistic care.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as a primary point of contact for families and external settings (schools/colleges) to ensure consistency across all environments.
- Risk Management: Lead on property risk assessments and environmental recommendations to minimize triggers and ensure staff safety.
- Regulatory Coordination: Coordinating with Registered Managers to ensure CQC standard adherence.
- Safeguarding Leadership: Take the lead on all safeguarding concerns, ensuring a safe environment for residents and responding appropriately in line with organizational policies and procedures.
- Quality Assurance: Share in implementing the quality assurance system, including contributing to mock inspections of the service and developing action plans to address identified shortfalls.
The Person Specification outlines the essential and desirable criteria for the PBS Team Leader role.
Essential qualifications include a Level 3 or 4 in Health and Social Care/Lead Adult Care and a Supervisory or Management qualification commensurate with the role.
Desirable qualifications are a Degree in Psychology, Social Care, or a related field, and Accredited PBS or Functional Assessment training.
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a complex supported living setting, including substantial experience in a PBS or high-acuity care role, previous experience leading or supervising a care team, and experience working with service users with Autism and Learning Disabilities.
Experience in conducting behavioral observations and data analysis is desirable.
Essential skills require Advanced communication and conflict resolution skills, Proficiency in analytical record keeping and report writing, the Ability to perform and train others in their role, and Problem-solving and adaptive skills to quickly address and resolve daily operational situations.
A Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle (or willingness to work towards it) is also essential.
