Role Overview
We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Telehandler and Machine Operator who is responsible for the safe and efficient movement, loading, sorting, and processing of waste wood using telehandlers and other mobile plant equipment. The role supports site operations by ensuring materials are transported, stockpiled, loaded, and processed in accordance with environmental, health and safety, and operational standards.
Hours:
10.00 - 19.30 Monday to Thursday
7.00 - 16.30 Friday
(Includes 1 hour unpaid break each day)
Overtime Opportunities at 1.5 x basic Pay
Key Responsibilities
Telehandler Operation
- Operate telehandlers safely and efficiently to move waste wood.
- Load and unload HGVs, trailers, skips, containers, and processing equipment.
- Transport materials between storage bays and processing areas.
- Stack, stockpile, and segregate waste streams according to site procedures.
- Assess load weights and stability before lifting or transporting materials.
- Use appropriate attachments such as forks, buckets etc.
Plant & Machinery Operation
- Operate mobile plant including loading shovels, forklifts, excavators, compactors, balers, shredders, crushers, or screening equipment where authorised.
- Training will be provided
- Feed waste wood into processing machinery in a safe and controlled manner.
- Monitor plant performance and report faults or abnormalities.
- Carry out routine operational checks to maximise efficiency and minimise downtime.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Follow site health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times.
- Complete daily pre-start inspections and safety checks on machinery.
- Wear and maintain required PPE.
- Report accidents, near misses, defects, and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain awareness of pedestrians, vehicle movements, and site hazards following traffic movement plan.
- Ensure compliance with waste management permits and environmental regulations.
Maintenance & Housekeeping
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
- Clean machinery and work areas.
- Assist with routine servicing and defect reporting.
- Keep waste storage and operational areas clean, tidy, and organised.
- Support general site maintenance activities as required.
Operational Support
- Assist with waste acceptance, segregation, and quality control activities.
- Work collaboratively with site operatives, drivers, supervisors, and maintenance teams.
- Complete operational records, defect reports, and inspection paperwork.
- Support site productivity targets and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Record downtime and working hours in a daybook
· Be of assistance & support to Production Team is requested
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience operating a telehandler or similar mobile plant.
- Understanding of safe lifting and load stability.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures within industrial environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Strong awareness of site safety and environmental standards.
Desirable
- Experience within waste management, recycling, or manufacturing.
- Telehandler competency certificate (NPORS, CPCS, RTITB, or equivalent).
- Forklift, loading shovel, excavator, or material handler licences.
- Knowledge of waste segregation and recycling processes.
- First Aid or Health & Safety qualifications.
Pay: From £15.50 per hour
