Main purpose of role:
The Carpenter / Multi-Skilled Operative will deliver high-quality carpentry works as their primary trade, alongside a range of general maintenance and refurbishment activities across residential and commercial properties.
The role is heavily focused on void property refurbishment, responsive repairs, and retrofit programmes, ensuring properties are safe, compliant, and ready for occupation.
The postholder will utilise their carpentry expertise while supporting minor works across other trades (e.g. plumbing, patch repairs), contributing to efficient, right-first-time delivery.
Main duties:
Carpentry (Core Trade)
- Carry out a wide range of carpentry works, including:
o Door installations and adjustments (including fire doors where required)
o Repair/replacement of skirting, architraves, flooring, and joists
o Kitchen unit installation and repairs
o Fitting locks, hinges, and associated ironmongery
- Ensure all works are completed to a high standard with a strong focus on finish and durability.
Void Refurbishment & Property Works
- Undertake full or partial void property refurbishments, ensuring properties meet lettable standards.
- Carry out strip-out, repair, and reinstatement works as required.
- Work alongside other trades to deliver end-to-end void completion programmes.
Multi-Skilled Repairs & Maintenance
- Undertake general repairs including:
o Basic plumbing (e.g. replacing taps, fixing leaks)
o Minor plastering and making good
o General property maintenance tasks
- Support planned and reactive maintenance works across housing stock and buildings.
Retrofit & Damp / Mould Works
- Support retrofit programmes, including:
o Installation of loft and underfloor insulation
o Preparation and making good following insulation works
- Assist in the treatment of damp and mould issues in line with required standards.
Customer & Site Responsibilities
- Work in occupied and void properties, maintaining high standards of customer care and professionalism.
- Liaise with tenants, residents, and stakeholders to minimise disruption and resolve issues.
- Ensure work areas are left safe, clean, and tidy.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all Health & Safety policies and safe working practices.
- Complete job sheets, risk assessments, and required documentation accurately.
- Ensure works align with relevant regulations, including fire safety requirements where applicable.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
- Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Carpentry and Joinery (or equivalent)
Experience:
- Proven experience in a carpenter-biased multi-skilled role
- Experience working within voids, repairs, or maintenance environments
- Strong experience in first and second fix carpentry
- Experience working in residential properties (social housing desirable)
Skills & Competencies:
- High-quality workmanship with strong attention to detail
- Ability to deliver efficient, right-first-time repairs and installations
- Good problem-solving and fault-finding ability
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and customer-facing skills
Other Requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Ability to work as part of a 7-day rota including out-of-hours service
- Flexible and adaptable approach to workload
Desirable (Not Essential)
- Experience installing or maintaining fire doors (FD30/FD60)
- Experience in kitchen and bathroom installations
- Experience supporting retrofit / insulation programmes (PAS-aligned environments)
- Basic understanding of multiple trades (plumbing, plastering)
- Experience in damp and mould remediation
- Valid CSCS Card
