EniProgetti UK operates a SmartWorking policy allowing personnel to work for up to 12 working days/month from home or a similar secure location and these 12 days can be available even where personnel are on leave for a portion of the month. As such, typically around 60% of time working remotely is available for individuals who wish to take advantage of this.
Role Overview
A Principal Engineer, Technical Safety is required to join the team at EniProgetti UK in Basingstoke. They will be capable of performing and perform, when required, all the duties and responsibilities of the lower grade(s), plus the below responsibilities.
Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
Procedures, Standards and the Quality System
- Critically review the suitability and accuracy of company technical procedures and develop new ones as required.
- Possess detailed knowledge of a wide variety of quality procedures relating to all aspects of a project.
- Advise on correct interpretation and application of national and international standards.
Technical
- Prepare complex and/or unique calculations.
- Check and approve, as appropriate, the engineering deliverables prepared by more junior engineers. Investigate alternative solutions.
- Perform the technical functions of the Technical Safety PDL on larger and more complex projects.
- Ensure all activities associated with the design of a “safe” plant are completed.
- Act as the discipline technical representative in dealing with Eni HQ and Third Parties.
- Provide technical support for proposal activities.
- Co-ordinate onsite activities of pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up and performance test runs.
Use of Software
- Approve the use of software for unusual or marginal applications.
- Represent the discipline when new software systems are introduced to the company.
Relationship Management
- Involved with Eni HQ and/or JV partners as required by the project organisation.
- Assist Department Chief Engineer in the preparation of proposals and manhour estimates.
- Mentor and coach less experienced engineers.
- Undertake local and international business trips as required by the Project.
- Manage communications with the Knowledge Owner and Technical Authority teams at Headquarters regarding the review, discussion, and approval of project requests for deviations from Eni standards and guidelines.
- Collaborate with Technical Safety teams across business branches to ensure methodologies, analyses, and calculations remain aligned with Eni’s Operating Procedures and Standards.
- For complex projects, coordinate assigned Technical Safety resources by balancing workload and allocating activities based on competencies, experience, and project-specific requirements to ensure effective project execution.
Organisation, Leadership and Autonomy
- Excellent communication skills with a positive and collaborative attitude.
- Able to motivate personnel and make decisions autonomously.
- Perform the administrative functions of Technical Safety PDL and Study Manager as appropriate.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan, prioritise and complete allocated workload within the allotted manhours and schedule for major projects.
- Assist the Department Chief Engineer in the allocation of manpower resources and in the identification of recruitment requirements.
- Assist the Department Chief Engineer with the appraisals by providing the required input and feedback on performance.
- Prepare discipline manhour estimates for both new proposals and variations to a project due to a change in the scope of work.
- Deliver internal Technical Safety training to less experienced team members.
- Deputise for the Department Chief as required.
Knowledge and Experience
- Sufficient experience to lead large projects with range of technical safety activities, and to follow the work conducted by third party engineering contractors or
- Significant technical expertise in at least one area / technology.
Preference for candidates who are highly skilled in risk assessment methodologies.

Qualifications
- Degree in relevant engineering discipline, e.g. Chemical Engineering, accredited by the relevant chartered engineering institute (e.g. IChemE).
