The Role
We are seeking a patient, experienced and emotionally attuned Specialist SEN Tutor to provide 1:1 face-to-face tuition for a primary-aged learner with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD who is currently out of education and awaiting a specialist school placement.
This role is focused on re-engaging the student with learning through a highly personalised, regulation-led approach. Alongside English and Maths, the tutor will support the development of social communication, emotional regulation, confidence, and learning readiness.
The successful tutor will understand that progress begins with building trust, reducing anxiety around learning, and creating a safe, predictable environment where the student can succeed.
This is a potentially long-term placement.
About the Student
- Primary-aged learner currently out of education
- Diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD
- Bright with strong reading and comprehension skills
- Enjoys:
- Maths and problem-solving

- Responds well to structure, routine, visuals and positive reinforcement

Key Challenges
- Significant gaps in education due to prolonged absence from school
- Emotional dysregulation when overwhelmed or placed under pressure
- Demand avoidance, particularly around reading and writing tasks
- Sensory sensitivities to noise, busy environments, light and certain textures
- Difficulty with transitions, unexpected changes and perceived failure
- Finds large group environments highly distressing
- Requires a low-arousal, predictable approach to learning
The first stage of this role is focused on building a positive relationship, establishing trust, and helping the student feel safe and successful within a learning environment.
What You'll Do
- Deliver engaging 1:1 tuition in English and Maths
- Support social communication and emotional regulation development
- Use a low-demand, autism-informed approach
- Structure sessions into short, achievable learning activities
- Incorporate movement, sensory and regulation breaks throughout sessions
- Use visual supports, choice-making opportunities and reward systems
- Adapt learning to the student's interests and strengths
- Record progress and provide regular feedback to the commissioning team
- Work collaboratively with parents and professionals where appropriate
What We're Looking For
Experience supporting:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- ADHD
- Emotionally dysregulated learners
- Learners with school avoidance or disrupted education
The ideal tutor will be:
- Calm, patient and highly relationship-focused
- Experienced in delivering SEN or alternative provision tuition
- Skilled in low-arousal and trauma-informed approaches
- Confident teaching primary-level English and Maths
- Flexible, reflective and able to adapt sessions in real time
- Reliable and committed to consistency
Essential Requirements
- Experience working with children with additional needs
- Enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one)
- Right to work in the UK
- Ability to deliver face-to-face tuition
Role Details
- 15 hours per week
- Approximately 3 hours per day
- Morning sessions preferred
- Face-to-face provision
- Home-based or community-based tuition within the Medway area
- Start date: Immediate
- Ongoing placement pending specialist school transition and review
