The Renewable Energy Electrician is responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of Solar PV, Battery Storage, EV Charging, and Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) electrical systems across domestic, commercial, and social housing programmes. Working within the Installation Delivery team and reporting to the Electrical Installation Manager / Project Manager / Site Manager, the post holder will deliver electrical works to the highest technical and compliance standards, supporting Union Technical Services' continued growth across Solar PV, Battery Storage, and EV Charging programmes throughout Scotland and the wider UK.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Solar PV & Battery Storage Installation
- Install Solar PV systems including AC and DC wiring, inverters, isolators, monitoring systems, and generation meters.
- Install and commission battery storage systems in accordance with manufacturer and MCS requirements.
- Carry out consumer unit upgrades and electrical modifications where required to support system installation.
- Complete electrical testing, inspection, and certification of all completed Solar PV and battery storage works.
EV Charging & ASHP Electrical Works
- Install domestic and commercial EV charging equipment in line with manufacturer specification and current regulations.
- Work alongside heating teams to complete the electrical wiring of Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) installations.
- Ensure all ASHP electrical connections, including supply and earth bonding, are correctly installed and tested.
Testing, Certification & Fault Finding
- Carry out electrical testing, inspection, and certification of all completed works in accordance with BS 7671.
- Complete installation paperwork and certification accurately and within required timescales.
- Identify and resolve faults on renewable energy systems, carrying out remedial works as required.
- Ensure each installation has the required supply and earth bonding in place before energisation.
Photographic Evidence & Job Card Completion
Capture all required photographic evidence at each stage of the installation in accordance with the UTS photographic schedule, including: pre-install electrical installation condition (consumer unit, existing supply, and earthing arrangement),serial number labels on inverter, and battery unit, DC and AC cable routing and containment, isolator and consumer unit modifications, earthing and bonding connections, EV charger mounting position and cable route, and the completed installation from a suitable vantage point.
Record all installed equipment serial numbers — panels, inverter, battery, EV charger unit, and any additional electrical accessories (isolators, RCDs, consumer units) — accurately on the job card before leaving site.
Complete the electrician's job card in full upon completion, including confirmation of system layout, test results, any site notes, and sign-off on the electrical safety and compliance of the installation (in accordance with BS 7671).
Notify the site manager of any on-site changes before they are implemented; record all approved deviations on the job card with supporting photographs.
Submit photographic evidence and the completed job card, along with test certificates, to the programme management system via company tablet on the day of installation.
Compliance & Site Standards
- Ensure all on-site installations comply with BS 7671, MCS standards, PAS 63100, G98/G99, and other applicable industry and funder requirements.
- Liaise with office staff, the Design Team, and Compliance Coordinators to ensure adequate resource, materials, and documentation are in place for successful installations.
- Attend site meetings and toolbox talks as required, contributing to a culture of best practice and continuous improvement.
- Liaise professionally with customers, site teams, and project management throughout the installation process.
Supervision of Labourers & Site Staff
- Ensure any labourers or additional staff working with you follow all relevant Health & Safety regulations while on site.
- Ensure any labourers or additional staff working with you always follow best working practice.
Management System Responsibilities
- Ensure all company processes and procedures are always followed; where they cannot be followed, inform the management team immediately.
- Complete all documentation and records required by the UTS Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety Management System accurately and on time.
- Take personal responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and all others in your working area.
- Report any environmental incidents or emergency situations to management immediately.
- Carry out all training and development requested by the company and actively contribute to a culture of continuous improvement across all areas of responsibility.
- Carry out any other reasonable requests made by the management team in support of programme delivery.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
- Inspection & Testing qualification (City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent).
- Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems.
- Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems.
- EV Charging qualification (City & Guilds 2919 or equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years' electrical installation experience.
- Strong understanding of BS 7671 and safe isolation procedures.
- Full UK driving licence.
- ECS / JIB Gold Card.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Competence in using a tablet device for job card submission and photographic upload via company-approved systems.
Desirable
- Relevant product or manufacturer training (e.g. FoxESS, SolaX, Fastensol).
- Experience working with Solar PV, Battery Storage, and EV charging systems within a social housing or RSL programme context.
- Knowledge of G98/G99 grid connection processes and renewable energy compliance requirements.
ACCREDITATION & COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
The post holder must hold, or be willing to work towards, the following accreditations as a condition of continued employment in this role:
- MCS-aligned installation competency for Solar PV and Battery Storage systems (MCS 012, MCS 020).
- Compliance with PAS 63100:2024 (EV charge point cyber security) for all EV charging installations.
- G98/G99 awareness for grid-connected generation and storage systems.
- Manufacturer-specific product training as assigned (e.g. FoxESS, SolaX, Fastensol, EV charge point manufacturers).
- Disclosure Scotland check, where required for site access.
- Compliance with UTS Quality, Environmental, and Health & Safety Management System procedures at all times.
