This post is based in the Department of Genetics, Evolution & Environment (GEE) and is an exciting opportunity to join the Camus group, working in close collaboration with Professor Nick Lane, in the Centre for Life's Origins and Evolution (CLOE). You will work in a small, collaborative and supportive team that uses Drosophila as a model to understand how interactions between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes shape physiology, fitness and adaptation in a changing environment.
The main purpose of this position is to complete the final population-genomics objective of a Leverhulme Trust funded project, "Predicting the outcomes of mitonuclear introgression".
Specifically, the post holder will analyse Pool-Seq data generated from Drosophila experimental evolution cages in which admixed mitonuclear populations have been evolving under thermal and nutritional stressors. They will characterise allele frequency dynamics through time, identify candidate loci and pathways under selection (with particular focus on nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes), and integrate the results with the phenotypic, mitochondrial physiology and RNA-Seq datasets already generated by the group. The role will involve close collaboration with the PI and co-investigator and is expected to lead to one or more peer-reviewed publications.
This is a fixed-term role from 1 October 2026 until 15 January 2027 in the first instance, to complete a defined work package on an existing Leverhulme Trust grant.
- Salary will be at UCL Grade 7.
- Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (including corrections).
- We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.
- This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 40% on site.

Given the short fixed duration of this contract, this role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. You will be a researcher with strong skills in the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data and a genuine interest in evolutionary and population genomics. Over the course of the contract you will be expected to deliver a clean, reproducible analysis of the Pool-Seq dataset, integrate it with existing phenotypic and transcriptomic data, and contribute substantively to one or more manuscripts.
You must have a PhD (awarded or close to submission) in evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or a closely related discipline, and proven knowledge of population genomics concepts and methods.
Experience analysing Pool-Seq, whole-genome resequencing or comparable high-throughput sequencing data is essential, as is proficiency in scripting (Python, R and/or Bash) and working in a Linux/HPC environment. Prior experience with Drosophila or mitochondrial/mitonuclear biology would be an advantage but is not essential.
