David Watson Transport is looking for an ambitious and motivated Depot/Transport Manager to lead our busy depot in Sherburn-in-Elmet.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced manager or transport professional looking to progress their career. Full training will be provided, and we will support the successful candidate in gaining their Transport Manager CPC qualification.
As Depot Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of the depot, leading a team of drivers and office staff, ensuring compliance, driving operational efficiency, and delivering excellent customer service.
What You'll Be Doing:
Operational Leadership
- Deliver the depot's budgeted profit and performance targets.
- Manage the day-to-day running of the depot, ensuring efficient and cost-effective operations.
- Schedule driver workloads effectively to maximise fleet utilisation and productivity.
- Work closely with other depot managers to ensure fleet resources are utilised efficiently across the business.
- Collaborate with all departments to maintain smooth depot operations and excellent service delivery.
Team Management
- Lead, motivate and develop Drivers, Key Account Managers, Administration and Warehouse staff.
- Build strong working relationships with colleagues based on trust, respect and professionalism.
- Support and guide staff to ensure high standards of performance and customer service.
- Manage driver-related issues promptly, professionally and fairly.
- Liaise with HR regarding employee relations and people management matters.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure full compliance with all transport legislation, driver regulations and company policies.
- Monitor driver hours, Working Time Directive requirements, timesheets and bonus schemes.
- Carry out depot Health & Safety inspections and audits in line with company standards.
- Ensure vehicle checks, fleet inspections and driver compliance checks are completed accurately and on time.
- Work closely with the Training Department to ensure driver training remains current.
- Liaise with the Service Department to ensure MOTs, servicing and repairs are planned and completed as required.
- Support the maintenance of ISO accreditations and company compliance standards.
Communication & Collaboration
- Attend Trading Review Meetings with the Operations Director.
- Provide support and guidance to Key Account Managers to ensure accurate information is communicated to customers and drivers.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, colleagues and stakeholders regarding operational requirements, changes and issues.
This role requires flexibility, and from time to time you may be asked to undertake other duties appropriate to the position.
About You:
Essential
- Previous management or supervisory experience.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Intermediate IT skills.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
- A proactive, adaptable and solutions-focused approach.
- Strong attention to detail.
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
Desirable
- Transport or logistics industry experience.
- Management CPC qualification.
- Full LGV C+E (Class 1) licence.
- Specialist transport knowledge.
