About Buildtonic
Buildtonic Ltd is a heritage and residential main contractor operating across Hampshire, Surrey and London. We work almost exclusively on listed and historic buildings, Grade II and Grade II*, acting as principal contractor on refurbishment, structural repair and conversion projects.
The role
We are looking for an experienced heritage carpenter to lead structural timber repairs on a programme of listed building projects booked from [October 2026] onwards. This is a hands-on role with responsibility for running the carpentry works on site, working directly with the company director.
Responsibilities
- Structural timber repairs to historic roofs, floors and frames, including splicing, scarfing, end and foot repairs, resin and flitch repairs
- Strengthening and replacement of purlins, rafters, wall plates, tie beams and trimmers
- Working to structural engineers' details and approved listed building consent drawings
- Setting out and sequencing your own works, and coordinating other trades on site
- Recording what is found on opening up, and flagging variations to the director
- Maintaining safe working practices, including working at height and around asbestos containing materials
Essential requirements
- Time served carpenter with demonstrable structural repair experience on listed or historic buildings
- Ability to read and work from structural engineers' drawings and details
- Traditional jointing and hand cutting skills
- Experience leading works on site and coordinating other trades
- Valid CSCS card
- Own hand tools, power tools and transport
- Registered as self-employed with a UTR, CIS registered, and holding public liability insurance
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable
- Green oak and traditional timber framing
- SPAB, Carpenters' Fellowship or equivalent heritage training
- Experience working alongside lime plaster, lime render and leadwork
- SSSTS or SMSTS, first aid at work, asbestos awareness, IPAF or PASMA
- Ability to measure and price your own works
