About Life Shed
Life Shed supports young people aged 6–20+ who face barriers to education, engagement, and personal development. Through bespoke mentoring programmes, we help young people build confidence, improve emotional wellbeing, develop positive relationships, and achieve meaningful outcomes.
We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and motivated Mentor to join our team and make a genuine difference in the lives of young people.
The Role
As a Mentor, you will provide positive, individualised mentoring support to young people with a range of needs, vulnerabilities, behaviours, and engagement challenges. You will build strong, trust-based relationships that nurture, support, encourage, and appropriately challenge young people to achieve their goals.
Experience supporting young people with learning disabilities, additional needs, emotional wellbeing difficulties, or mental health challenges is desirable but not essential. More important is your ability to connect with young people, remain calm under pressure, and adopt a solution-focused approach.
An essential part of the role involves providing safe 1:1 transport to and from mentoring sessions. Transport plays a key role in removing barriers to participation and provides valuable opportunities to build relationships and engage with young people in a relaxed environment. Successful candidates must therefore be willing to drive significant distances when required, sometimes exceeding 80 miles per day.
Key Responsibilities
- Build positive, trusting relationships with young people and provide consistent, high-quality support.
- Support young people to identify and overcome barriers to education, engagement, and personal development.
- Develop and implement individualised mentoring and support plans tailored to each young person's needs.
- Set, monitor, and review short-, medium-, and long-term goals with young people.
- Manage and respond appropriately to challenging behaviours.
- Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date records that evidence progress, outcomes, and targets.
- Communicate effectively with families, schools, local authorities, and other partner agencies.
- Work collaboratively with professionals to identify and access appropriate support services.
- Ensure all activities are delivered in accordance with safeguarding, health and safety, data protection, and organisational policies.
- Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all young people.
Essential Requirements
- Full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Willingness to travel extensively as required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with young people from a variety of backgrounds.
- Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience working with children and young people in education, youth work, social care, mentoring, or similar settings.
- Knowledge of learning disabilities, SEND, emotional regulation, trauma-informed practice, or mental health support.
- Relevant qualifications in education, youth work, health and social care, counselling, psychology, or related fields.
