Job Overview
DNS Design Ltd is a small but growing architectural design practice based in Hartlepool, working on a wide range of residential, commercial and small development projects across the North East.
We are looking for an Architectural Designer / Architectural Technician to join the business and assist with planning drawings, building regulation packages, measured surveys, client amendments and general project coordination.
This role may suit someone who has gained strong experience in practice, on site, or within the construction industry, but may not necessarily have followed the traditional academic route. At DNS Design, we value experience, practical knowledge and ability over qualifications alone.
The successful applicant must be confident using both Revit and CAD / AutoCAD, as these are essential to the day-to-day role. You will need to be able to produce clear, accurate and professional drawings suitable for planning and building control submissions.
This role would suit someone who enjoys working in a small business environment where no two jobs are the same. You will be involved in real projects from an early stage, including domestic extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions, HMOs, commercial units, change of use applications, planning submissions and building regulation drawings.
We are looking for someone practical, organised and able to communicate well with clients, consultants, local authorities and contractors.
Main Duties
The role will include:
- Preparing existing and proposed drawings for planning applications.
- Producing building regulation drawings and construction details.
- Using Revit and CAD / AutoCAD to prepare accurate floor plans, elevations, sections, site plans and technical drawings.
- Assisting with measured surveys and site visits.
- Drawing up domestic extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions, commercial alterations and change of use schemes.
- Preparing location plans, block plans, elevations, floor plans, sections and technical details.
- Making amendments following client comments, planning officer comments or building control feedback.
- Liaising with clients, consultants, engineers, contractors and local authority officers where required.
- Helping to manage workload and keep projects moving.
- Supporting the business with design ideas, technical input and practical construction knowledge.
- Ensuring drawings are accurate, clear and suitable for submission.
Essential Experience / Skills
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong working knowledge of Revit.
- Strong working knowledge of CAD / AutoCAD.
- Experience producing architectural drawings in a professional or construction-related setting.
- Good practical construction knowledge.
- Ability to produce accurate planning and building regulation drawings.
- Good understanding of domestic extensions, alterations and small building projects.
- Good attention to detail.
- Ability to work on more than one project at a time.
- Good communication skills and a practical approach to problem solving.
- Confidence to work independently once briefed.
Formal qualifications in architecture, architectural technology, building surveying or construction are welcome, but they are not essential where the applicant can demonstrate suitable experience and ability.
Desirable but Not Essential
Experience with any of the following would be useful but is not essential:
- SketchUp
- Photoshop or similar presentation software
- Measured surveys
- Planning statements or design and access statements
- Building control submissions
- Domestic extensions, HMOs or small commercial projects
- Dealing with planning officers, building control, engineers or contractors
- Previous site or trade experience
What We Offer
- A varied role within a small, growing business.
- Involvement in real projects from start to finish.
- A practical and supportive working environment.
- Flexible working arrangements considered.
- Opportunity to develop planning, technical drawing and building regulation experience.
- Direct experience working with clients, consultants and local authorities.
- Long-term opportunity to grow with the business.
