About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Contracts Supervisor to join our team and support the delivery of Breedon’s DFI framework contracts across Northern Ireland.
This is a hands-on operational role where you’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day planning, coordination and supervision of surfacing and associated works. You’ll work closely with our Contracts Manager, site teams, subcontractors and wider operational functions to make sure works are delivered safely, efficiently, to the required quality, on programme and within budget.
It’s a role with plenty of variety and responsibility. One day you could be planning upcoming works and coordinating labour, plant and materials; the next you may be resolving an issue on site, meeting with a client or reviewing contract performance with the wider team.
You’ll play an important role in keeping our contracts running smoothly from both an operational and commercial perspective.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning, programming and supervising day-to-day surfacing and civils works alongside the Contracts Manager.
- Coordinating labour, subcontractors, plant, materials and other resources required to deliver works effectively.
- Leading and supporting site-based teams, setting clear expectations and promoting strong communication and teamwork.
- Ensuring works are completed safely and in line with Breedon procedures, relevant legislation and contract requirements.
- Monitoring the quality of workmanship and materials to ensure consistently high standards.
- Carrying out site inspections and ensuring the required safety, quality and operational records are completed and maintained.
- Identifying and resolving operational problems quickly, escalating issues where required.
- Monitoring the use of labour, plant and materials to ensure resources are being used efficiently.
- Supporting the measurement, valuation and invoicing of completed works.
- Assisting with monthly cost reviews, subcontractor payments and wider contract cost control.
- Maintaining accurate records to support valuations, cost management and final accounts.
- Liaising directly with customers and clients and representing Breedon at site, progress and contract meetings when required.
- Working closely with colleagues across Asphalt, Quarrying, Technical, Health & Safety, Quality, HR and Finance to support successful contract delivery.
You’ll ideally have experience within surfacing, highways, road construction or road maintenance, along with a good understanding of how site-based works are planned and delivered.
We’re particularly interested in candidates who have:
- At least two years’ supervisory experience within the surfacing, highways or road construction/maintenance sector.
- Experience managing site-based teams and coordinating subcontractors.
- Good knowledge of relevant materials, plant, specifications and construction methods.
- A strong understanding of Health & Safety and quality requirements within a construction or highways environment.
- Strong planning, organisational and communication skills.
- The confidence to make decisions and solve problems in a fast-moving site environment.
- Good commercial awareness, including an understanding of cost control and contract performance.
A third-level qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous, but it isn’t essential. If you have strong, relevant industry experience, we’d be equally interested in hearing from you.
The kind of person who will thrive in this role
You’ll be someone who enjoys taking ownership and making things happen.
You’ll be comfortable working independently, managing changing priorities and balancing the needs of the customer with safety, quality, programme and commercial requirements.
Most importantly, you’ll be a strong communicator and team player who can build positive working relationships with site teams, customers, subcontractors and colleagues across the wider Breedon business.
If you have experience delivering surfacing or highways works and are ready to take on a role with real operational responsibility, we’d love to hear from you.
