Gorsey Clough Nursing Home is looking for an experienced, compassionate and motivated Sister / Charge Nurse to join our established day team.
Gorsey Clough Nursing Home provides high-quality, person-centred and supportive nursing care for older people, including people living with dementia.

The Role
As Sister / Charge Nurse, you will be responsible for providing high-quality nursing care.
Working closely with the Deputy Manager and Registered Manager, you will have key responsibility for the quality of care delivered to residents, including assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation.
The role is focused on clinical nursing responsibilities and overseeing the care team during the shift and does not carry wider management responsibility for the Home.
Key Responsibilities
As Sister / Charge Nurse, you will:
- Lead and oversee the care team during your shift.
- Allocate and delegate duties appropriately according to residents' needs and staff competencies.
- Ensure residents receive a consistently high standard of safe, effective and person-centred care.
- Assess residents' nursing and healthcare needs and develop individualised care plans in partnership with residents and their families wherever possible.
- Implement, review and evaluate care plans to ensure they continue to meet residents' changing needs.
- Complete and review risk assessments and ensure appropriate measures are in place to manage identified risks.
- Promote residents' rights to privacy, dignity, choice, independence, autonomy and safety.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to deterioration or changes in residents' health and care needs.
- Undertake clinical procedures within your professional competence, including physiological observations, wound care and PEG care.
- Undertake other appropriate nursing and clinical skills following the required training and competency assessment.
- Order, administer and manage medicines safely in accordance with legislation, professional standards and Gorsey Clough Nursing Home's Medicines Policy.
- Ensure controlled drugs are appropriately ordered, stored, administered, recorded and disposed of.
- Support residents receiving palliative and end-of-life care.
- Take appropriate action in relation to safeguarding concerns and escalate these in accordance with safeguarding procedures.
- Oversee and monitor care practices throughout the shift.
- Provide appropriate clinical guidance and support to the care team.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous electronic care and clinical records.
- Lead effective handovers and ensure important information is communicated appropriately.
- Support safe transfers of care, including hospital admissions and discharges.
- Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies and seek additional or specialist assistance where required.
Communication & Multidisciplinary Working
You will:
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with residents, their families and representatives.
- Develop positive working relationships with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Liaise with hospitals, pharmacies, community healthcare professionals and other relevant services.
- Advocate for residents where appropriate to ensure their needs, wishes and preferences are represented.
- Ensure important information regarding residents' care is communicated effectively.
- Provide appropriate information, advice and reassurance to residents and their families.
Leading & Supporting the Care Team
You will:
- Provide day-to-day clinical guidance and oversight to the care team.
- Ensure allocated care duties are completed appropriately.
- Monitor standards of care throughout the shift.
- Support Care Assistants in delivering safe, compassionate and person-centred care.
- Ensure staff follow residents' care plans, risk assessments and Home procedures.
- Promote effective teamwork and communication.
- Address immediate concerns regarding standards of care and escalate these appropriately.
- Escalate staffing, practice or quality concerns to the Care Services Manager or Registered Manager.
- Act as a positive professional role model.
Clinical Governance & Professional Responsibilities
As a Registered Nurse, you will:
- Maintain current NMC registration.
- Practise in accordance with the NMC Code and relevant professional standards.
- Take professional accountability for your nursing practice, decisions and appropriate delegation.
- Work in accordance with Gorsey Clough Nursing Home's policies and procedures.
- Maintain your professional knowledge, clinical skills and competencies.
- Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development.
- Maintain a professional portfolio and meet NMC revalidation requirements.
- Participate in appraisal and identify professional development needs.
- Keep up to date with relevant developments in nursing practice.
- Participate in clinical governance, audits and quality improvement activities where required.
- Ensure accidents, incidents, medication errors and clinical concerns are appropriately reported and escalated.
- Comply with health and safety requirements and contribute to maintaining a safe environment for residents, colleagues and visitors.
What We Are Looking For
Applicants must:
- Be a Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Have strong clinical nursing skills.
- Be confident leading and overseeing a care team during a shift.
- Have excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Demonstrate a compassionate and person-centred approach.
- Be able to recognise and respond appropriately to changes in residents' conditions.
- Have a good understanding of medicines management and safeguarding.
- Understand the importance of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Best Interests decision-making.
- Be committed to maintaining residents' dignity, independence, choice and quality of life.
- Work effectively with residents, families and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
- Already have the legal right to work in the UK.
Previous experience within older people's nursing, dementia care or a nursing-home environment would be advantageous.
