Overview
We are seeking a versatile and motivated Horticultural & Breeding Assistant to join our dynamic team. This hands-on role offers a unique opportunity to work across both commercial nursery management and plant breeding research.
Your time will be shared between supporting our nursery team with daily cultural tasks and working alongside our Breeding Technicians on pollination, seed harvesting, and research trials. Because of the seasonal nature of our work, your focus will shift dynamically between these two departments depending on peak operational demands throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
Nursery & Crop Maintenance
- Assist the nursery team with daily cultural tasks, including potting, spacing, staking, and pricking out.
- Perform general plant maintenance to ensure optimal crop health, quality, and vigor.
- Monitor plant development and promptly report any cultural, pest, or disease issues to the growing team.
- Assist with watering duties as and when required.
Breeding & Research Support
- Carry out controlled pollinations and harvest seed across a diverse range of crops.
- Clean, process, and prepare seed batches for research and upcoming trials.
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of breeding activities, crosses, and seed inventory.
About You
Experience:Previous hands-on experience in a nursery or commercial greenhouse is desirable.
Passion:A genuine interest in plants, horticulture, or plant science.
Precision & Efficiency:Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to perform precise, repetitive tasks (such as pollination and seed cleaning) accurately and efficiently.
Teamwork & Autonomy:A collaborative mindset with the ability to work well within a close-knit team, alongside the self-motivation to work independently.
Adaptability:Comfortable working in varied environments, including very warm glasshouses in the summer and cold and sometime wet during winter months.
Physical Stamina:This is a physically active role requiring you to work on your feet for up to 7.5 hours per day.
Pay: Up to £12.71 per hour
