Personal Assistant – Fixed Term Maternity Cover
About Me
I’m a Disabled woman in my 40s. When I'm not working, I love going to the theatre, watching films, gaming and trying out new hobbies. I love going for a walk or spending time with friends and family. I'm also a real foodie!
I'm looking for a friendly, reliable and honest person to join my small team of Personal Assistants (PAs).
The role is about helping me to live independently by assisting with the physical tasks that I’m unable to manage myself. You don’t need previous care experience, as full training will be provided when you join the team.
I’m currently looking for someone to provide fixed-term maternity cover for one of my existing PAs. This is expected to start at the beginning of October, and I’m looking for someone to join the team in advance of this so they can get to know the role and settle in before the cover period begins.
Although this is initially a fixed-term maternity-cover position, there may be an opportunity for the right person to stay on as part of my PA team after the maternity-cover period ends, depending on the needs of the team and availability of hours. While this cannot be guaranteed, I’m always happy to keep good PAs on the team when opportunities arise.
The usual shifts during the maternity-cover period will be:
- Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings: 6.00pm–7.30pm
- 1 in 4 Sunday mornings: 9.00am–10.30am
This works out at approximately 7.5–10 hours per week, depending on the Sunday morning rota.
There may also be opportunities to cover additional shifts from time to time, which could include:
- Morning wake-up shifts: 8.30am–10.00am
- Daytime shifts: 10.30am–12.30pm
- Evening shifts: 6.00pm–7.30pm
- Occasional afternoons/days out: approximately 5-10 hours
The exact availability of additional shifts will vary, and these would be discussed in advance.
What Does the Role Involve?
The role involves providing practical assistance to help me manage everyday life independently.
This may include:
- Assisting me with getting dressed and undressed
- Helping me to sit upright in bed and with positioning
- Light personal care
- Light cleaning and household organising
- Helping with everyday tasks such as food shopping
- Assisting with mobility and positioning
- Accompanying me when I go out
- Assisting with admin
Full training will be provided, including training in the specific tasks you will need to carry out. A full job description is available on request.
Please note, this is a female-only position due to personal care requirements, in accordance with Part 1, Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.
I’m looking for someone who:
- Understands that the role is about supporting my independence, rather than taking over and doing everything for me.
- Is friendly, respectful, patient and approachable.
- Is honest and reliable – reliability is particularly important as I have a small team and depend on my PAs being able to attend their shifts.
- Can follow instructions and work independently once fully trained.
- You’ll be part of a small group of PAs, but shifts are always one-to-one with me, once induction is completed.
- Is physically able to assist with light mobility and positioning tasks.
- Is happy to accompany me with everyday activities, such as food shopping.
- Takes infection prevention seriously. I need to avoid unnecessary exposure to illness, so good hygiene and infection-control practices are important. PPE such as gloves and masks, along with antibacterial supplies, are provided where required.
Most importantly, I’m looking for someone who is kind, trustworthy and willing to learn. You don’t need to have worked as a PA before – the right attitude is more important than previous experience.
