Expectech Limited is a Glasgow-based IT consultancy and managed services provider, working with SMEs, professional firms, healthcare providers, retailers and educational institutions across Scotland and the wider UK. Our services span managed IT support, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, network management, digital transformation and bespoke software development.
As client demand for custom-built digital products grows, we are establishing a dedicated software development function and are recruiting our first in-house Software Developer.
The role
You will design, build, test and maintain cross-platform mobile and web applications for our clients, and contribute to internal automation and monitoring tooling. This is a hands-on engineering role with direct client exposure, reporting to the Director.
Key responsibilities
- Design, develop, test and maintain cross-platform mobile applications (iOS and Android) and responsive web applications to agreed client specifications.
- Translate client business requirements into technical designs, data models and system architecture, and document design decisions.
- Design, build and integrate RESTful APIs and third-party services, including authentication, cloud storage, mapping, messaging and payment providers.
- Implement secure development practices, including secure authentication, data encryption in transit and at rest, input validation and adherence to UK GDPR and data protection obligations.
- Write and maintain automated unit, widget and integration tests; participate in peer code review.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and manage releases to the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and web hosting environments.
- Diagnose and resolve defects and performance issues across the application stack, including profiling, refactoring and optimisation of data access.
- Produce technical documentation, effort estimates and handover materials, and support clients through post-deployment maintenance.
- Contribute to technical scoping and proposal work for prospective client projects.
Essential criteria
- A degree (RQF Level 6 or above) in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable professional software development experience.
- At least 2 years' commercial experience developing production mobile and/or web applications.
- Proficiency in at least one modern cross-platform mobile framework (for example Flutter/Dart, React Native, .NET MAUI or Kotlin Multiplatform).
- Practical experience integrating and consuming RESTful APIs and JSON-based services.
- Experience with a cloud backend or BaaS platform (for example Firebase, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud), including authentication and database services.
- Working knowledge of version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows.
- Understanding of secure coding practices and data protection requirements applicable to UK clients.
- Strong written and spoken English and the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical clients.
- Eligibility to work in the UK, or eligibility to be sponsored under the Skilled Worker route (see below).
Desirable criteria
- Experience with state management patterns and clean/layered architecture.
- Experience integrating payment gateways (for example Stripe or PayPal).
- Experience with CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, Jenkins or similar).
- Experience publishing applications to the App Store and Google Play.
- Exposure to consultancy or client-facing delivery environments.
- Experience with automated testing frameworks and test-driven development.
