We are seeking to recruit a full-time, permanent, hands-on Yard Manager to join our depot in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years' experience operating telehandlers or forklift trucks (telehandler experience preferred). They must be able to demonstrate previous experience in a similar supervisory or management role, ideally within the construction, plant hire or related industry. The successful applicant will have responsibility for Health & Safety management and day-to-day staff management.
This is not a desk-based management role. The Yard Manager will lead from the front, working alongside the Yard Operatives and remaining actively involved in the day-to-day running of the yard. The role involves labour-intensive duties and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Applicants must be comfortable undertaking physically demanding work and be able to demonstrate experience in similar environments.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the efficient operation of the yard, ensuring high standards of Health & Safety, managing staff, stock and equipment, and supporting the ongoing development of the depot.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the yard.
- Operate telehandlers and forklift trucks as required (telehandler experience preferred).
- Load and unload articulated vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Sort, inspect and manually clean hire and used timber mats.
- Manage yard layout, stock control and housekeeping, ensuring company standards are maintained at all times.
- Maintain accurate operational records and paperwork.
- Directly manage Yard Operatives, including all HR functions such as performance management, absence management, holidays, disciplinary matters and staff welfare.
- Liaise with temporary labour agencies to arrange staffing cover when required.
- Develop, implement and maintain Health & Safety policies and procedures.
- Produce, review and update risk assessments and ensure safe working practices are followed throughout the yard.
- Promote a positive Health & Safety culture and ensure compliance with company procedures and current legislation.
- Ensure the safety, security and maintenance of the yard, plant and equipment.
- Carry out regular stock checks and maintain stock accuracy.
- Arrange servicing and maintenance of telehandlers, forklifts and other yard equipment.
- Arrange skip exchanges, obtain quotations for consumables and minor repairs, and monitor fuel stocks.
- Support the Managing Director with the ongoing management and development of the yard.
- Provide regular updates to senior management regarding yard performance, staffing, stock levels and operational issues.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the level and responsibilities of the role.
Essential Requirements
- At least three years' experience operating telehandlers or forklift trucks within a commercial yard or construction environment (telehandler experience preferred).
- Proven experience in a supervisory or management role within a construction, plant hire or similar operational environment.
- Experience managing day-to-day HR matters and employee management responsibilities.
- Experience developing and maintaining Health & Safety procedures and ensuring compliance within an operational environment.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook and basic Excel.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Reliable, proactive and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Desirable
- Current telehandler licence.
- Experience handling construction or hire-based products.
- IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.
- Experience within the timber, construction, plant hire or civil engineering sectors.
