The role:
As a Specialist Mental Health Nurse (Band 6), you will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, providing specialist mental health assessment, care planning, intervention and care coordination for children and young people with complex and acute mental health needs. Working autonomously and collaboratively, you will deliver person-centred, recovery-focused care that promotes wellbeing, enhances self-management and supports positive outcomes for patients and their families. The role includes clinical leadership responsibilities, supervision of staff and learners, and active partnership working with patients, carers and a wide range of health, social care and partner agencies.

Key responsibilities:
The successful candidate will undertake comprehensive mental health and risk assessments, develop and deliver specialist programmes of care, and act as a Named Nurse/Care Coordinator for a designated caseload of patients with complex mental health needs. The post holder will work in partnership with patients, families and carers to develop co-produced care plans, safety plans and discharge plans, ensuring effective communication throughout the patient journey. Responsibilities include delivering evidence-based therapeutic interventions, administering and monitoring prescribed treatments, promoting mental wellbeing and relapse prevention, and maintaining high standards of clinical documentation.
The role also involves providing clinical leadership, supporting clinical governance, participating in audit and quality improvement activities, supervising and mentoring staff and students, contributing to workforce development, and ensuring compliance with professional, legal and organisational standards. The post holder will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and external agencies to coordinate care, advocate for patients and families, and ensure the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with current NMC registration.

Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Sound knowledge of contemporary mental health nursing practice and recovery-focused approaches.

Understanding of person-centred, strengths-based models of care.

Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management within mental health services.

Awareness and understanding of clinical governance principles and quality improvement methodologies.

Knowledge of relevant mental health legislation and professional requirements, including:

IT literacy and accurate record-keeping skills.
