Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Carpenter/Joiner to join our construction team. Based near York, our projects are predominantly within a 40-mile radius and focus on renovation and refurbishment of Listed and period buildings.
You will be responsible for preparing, installing, and repairing a variety of wooden components and structures on a building site, from initial structural work to final finishing tasks. This role requires a blend of technical skill, physical stamina, and strict adherence to health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
First Fix Joinery (Structural Work)
Reading and interpreting technical drawings.
Erecting structural carcassing, such as timber frames, stud walls, and partition walls.
Installing floor joists and coverings.
Constructing and fitting roof timbers, including rafters and trusses.
Building temporary wooden supports (formwork/shuttering) for setting concrete.
Installing door and window frames (linings).
Second Fix Joinery (Finishing Work)
Installing internal and external doors, including fitting locks, handles, and other ironmongery.
Fitting skirting boards, architraves, and window sills/boards.
Assembling and installing fitted furniture, such as kitchen units, cabinets, and shelving.
Building and installing staircases, including spindles and handrails.
Performing snagging and final fix work to a high standard.
General Site Responsibilities
Selecting, using, and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
Collaborating effectively with other tradespeople, site managers, and clients.
Adhering strictly to health, safety, and environmental regulations on site, including wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Maintaining a clean, safe, and organised work area.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience: Proven experience in carpentry and joinery, particularly on residential and Listed Building construction projects.
Qualifications: A time-served apprenticeship or relevant qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Carpentry and Joinery are often required.
Practical Skills: Strong practical skills, excellent attention to detail, and good mathematical ability for measurements and calculations are essential.
Physicality: The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and stand for extended periods.
Soft Skills: Problem-solving abilities, time management, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and good communication skills are highly valued.
Other: A full UK driving licence and having one's own tools are often necessary due to the need to travel to various sites.
