General role description
The MC MEWP Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) on rail infrastructure projects. The role involves carrying out planned access activities, working in accordance with Network Rail standards, site-specific requirements, and all relevant health, safety and environmental regulations. The operator must hold a valid Machine Controller (MC) competency and ensure the MEWP is operated safely within possession and worksite limits.
Duties and responsibilities
Core responsibilities will include:
- Operate rail-approved MEWPs safely and efficiently in accordance with manufacturer instructions and company procedures.
- Undertake Machine Controller (MC) duties associated with rail-mounted and road-rail MEWPs.
- Conduct pre-start inspections, function tests, and daily checks on all plant and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with Network Rail standards, Rule Book requirements, and project-specific safe systems of work.
- Work closely with COSS, ES, SWL, Site Supervisors, and Engineering teams.
- Set up and prepare MEWPs for operational use, including emergency rescue systems.
- Monitor machine performance and identify any defects or maintenance requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, defects, and operational activities.
- Adhere to fatigue management requirements and company policies.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and site inductions.
- Assist with planned and emergency engineering works, inspections, maintenance, renewals, and upgrades.
- Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified and report concerns through the appropriate channels.
- Ensure all activities are undertaken in accordance with environmental and sustainability requirements.

Skills and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience working within the rail infrastructure sector.
- Strong understanding of Network Rail standards and procedures.
- Ability to work safely under possession and isolation arrangements.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and on-call shifts when required.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Desirable
- AP (Authorised Person) Competency and OLE experience.
- Machine Controller Highway Permissible Vehicle (MC DPV) Competency.
- Small Tools Competencies.
- First Aid at Work.
- Manual Handling.
- Working at Height qualification.
- Emergency MEWP Rescue Training
Qualifications, Competencies and Training
- Valid Sentinel Card
- Current MC (Machine Controller) Competency
- COSS (Controller of Site Safety) Competency.
- MEWP Operator Competency (e.g., IPAF, PTS-endorsed or equivalent rail-approved qualification).
- Personal Track Safety (PTS).
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Medical fitness appropriate to rail industry standards.
- Experience operating rail-mounted or road-rail access platforms.
