Job Purpose
The Functional Skills & Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Tutor is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching, learning and learner support that enables apprentices to achieve Functional Skills qualifications and overcome barriers to learning.
Working closely with apprentices, Skills Coaches, employers and curriculum colleagues, the successful candidate will deliver engaging English and Mathematics tuition while coordinating effective additional learning support for learners requiring reasonable adjustments or specialist intervention.
The postholder will champion inclusive practice, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to achieve their full potential and progress successfully through their apprenticeship.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Assessment
The postholder will deliver engaging, learner-centred Functional Skills provision that supports apprentices to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to achieve English and Mathematics qualifications.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning and delivering high-quality Functional Skills teaching that meets individual learner needs.
- Completing initial, diagnostic and formative assessments to inform personalised learning.
- Supporting learners to achieve Functional Skills qualifications through effective coaching, feedback and targeted intervention.
- Preparing learners for examinations and assessments using a range of teaching approaches.
- Embedding literacy, numeracy and digital skills within vocational learning where appropriate.
- Promoting learner confidence, resilience and independent learning.
Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
The successful candidate will coordinate and deliver effective learning support for apprentices requiring additional assistance throughout their apprenticeship journey.
Responsibilities include:
- Identifying learners requiring additional learning support through screening and assessment.
- Developing individual support plans and recommending reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
- Monitoring learner progress and reviewing support strategies to ensure positive outcomes.
- Working collaboratively with Skills Coaches and curriculum colleagues to remove barriers to learning.
- Liaising with external agencies and specialist services where appropriate.
- Promoting inclusive teaching practices that enable all learners to succeed.
Learner Progress & Support
The postholder will manage an agreed caseload of learners, providing consistent support throughout their apprenticeship.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring learner progress, attendance and engagement.
- Conducting regular progress reviews and setting meaningful learning targets.
- Identifying learners at risk of withdrawal and implementing timely interventions.
- Encouraging learner confidence, wellbeing and successful progression.
- Working collaboratively with employers and colleagues to support positive learner outcomes.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Support OTM Apprenticeships Limited's commitment to high-quality apprenticeship delivery by:
- Maintaining accurate learner records and documentation.
- Ensuring delivery complies with awarding organisation and funding requirements.
- Participating in standardisation, quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintaining awareness of Ofsted expectations and best practice.
- Embedding safeguarding, Prevent Duty, British Values and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion throughout delivery.
Collaboration
Develop positive working relationships across the organisation to support learner achievement.
This includes:
- Working collaboratively with Skills Coaches and Tutors.
- Supporting curriculum teams through the sharing of effective practice.
- Liaising with employers regarding learner progress where appropriate.
- Contributing to curriculum development and quality improvement initiatives.
Key Performance Indicators
Performance within the role will be measured through:
- Functional Skills achievement rates.
- Learner retention and progression.
- Learner engagement and attendance.
- Quality of teaching, learning and assessment.
- Learner satisfaction.
- Timely completion of learner support plans.
- Compliance with quality assurance processes.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants will possess:
- A recognised teaching qualification (Level 3 Award in Education and Training or above), or willingness to achieve.
- Functional Skills or GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above.
- Assessor qualification (CAVA, A1 or equivalent), or willingness to achieve.
- Level 5 Specialist Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards (desirable).
Essential Occupational Experience
Applicants should be able to demonstrate recent experience of:
- Delivering Functional Skills English and/or Mathematics.
- Supporting learners with Additional Learning Needs within education or training.
- Delivering learner-centred teaching that promotes achievement and confidence.
- Working within apprenticeship, further education or adult learning environments.
- Implementing inclusive teaching practices that support learners with a wide range of learning needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- A strong understanding of Functional Skills delivery and effective teaching practice.
- Knowledge of inclusive learning strategies and supporting learners with Additional Learning Needs.
- Excellent communication, coaching and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple learner priorities.
- A learner-centred approach that promotes achievement, confidence and independence.
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Commitment to maintaining professional knowledge through continuous professional development.
Desirable
The following would be advantageous:
- Experience delivering Functional Skills within apprenticeship provision.
- Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
- Understanding of apprenticeship funding and quality requirements.
- Experience using e-portfolio and learner management systems.
- Experience working with awarding organisations and preparing learners for assessment.
