SEND Teaching Assistant – High-Needs Autism Provision – Tower Hamlets

Axcis are working with an inclusive primary school in Stepney, Tower Hamlets, who are seeking an experienced SEND Teaching Assistant to join their specialist alternative provision on a full-time, long-term basis from September.
The provision supports autistic children with significant and complex needs who benefit from a highly structured environment, individualised learning and consistent communication support. Pupils may be non-speaking, have sensory-processing differences or require support with emotional regulation and behaviour.
This role requires a strong SEND Teaching Assistant who understands high-needs autism and can remain calm, patient and consistent throughout the school day. The school is accessible from Stepney Green, Whitechapel, Limehouse, Mile End, Bethnal Green and surrounding areas.
About the Role
You will support pupils individually and in small groups, helping them access learning, communicate their needs and develop greater independence.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting autistic children with significant and complex needs
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support within the specialist provision
- Using visual timetables, Now and Next boards and structured routines
- Supporting non-speaking pupils with alternative communication methods
- Delivering sensory, communication and attention-based activities
- Helping pupils manage transitions and changes in routine
- Supporting emotional regulation and reducing anxiety
- Using positive behaviour support and appropriate de-escalation strategies
- Adapting activities around pupils' individual learning and EHCP targets
- Supporting pupils with personal care where required
- Working closely with teachers, therapists and specialist support staff
- Recording progress, incidents and relevant observations accurately
- Maintaining strong safeguarding and professional standards
Requirements
- Strong experience supporting autistic children with high or complex needs
- Previous experience as a SEND Teaching Assistant, SEN TA, Learning Support Assistant or Autism Support Worker
- Confidence supporting pupils who are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication
- Experience using visual communication and structured teaching approaches
- Understanding of sensory needs and emotional regulation
- Strong behaviour-management and de-escalation skills
- Confidence supporting pupils with challenging or distressed behaviour
- A calm, patient and emotionally resilient personality
- Willingness to support with personal care where required
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Strong safeguarding knowledge and professional boundaries
- Full-time availability and commitment from September
