Job Description
Merchant City Pub Co. is hiring an Assistant General Manager to join one of our busy Glasgow bars. This is a full-time, permanent Assistant General Manager role paying £32,000–£33,000 per year, based in the heart of Glasgow's Merchant City.
We run some of Glasgow's best-loved pubs, bars and restaurants, proper venues with real character, built on good food, good drink and genuinely warm hospitality. From a characterful gastro-pub with live music, to a reimagined traditional pub serving elevated comfort food, to an off the chart pizza joint with a soundtrack to match, every venue has its own personality, but all are run by people who love hospitality and take pride in guest experience.
We're looking for an experienced Assistant Manager, Duty Manager, or Deputy General Manager from a bar, pub, restaurant or wider hospitality background who is ready to step up into an Assistant General Manager position with real progression potential.
Assistant General Manager Responsibilities
- Support the General Manager across all day-to-day bar and restaurant operations, deputising fully in their absence
- Lead, coach and motivate the front-of-house, bar and floor team on every shift
- Drive consistent, high-quality customer service and guest experience standards
- Manage staff rotas, recruitment, onboarding and ongoing training
- Control stock, ordering, wastage and supplier relationships
- Support budgeting, cost control (GP) and hitting sales and revenue targets
- Ensure full compliance with health & safety, food hygiene and licensing law
- Handle daily operational problem-solving, from guest feedback to staffing gaps
- Help plan and deliver venue events, promotions and atmosphere
Assistant General Manager Requirements
- Proven experience as an Assistant Manager, Duty Manager or Assistant General Manager within a bar, pub, restaurant or hospitality venue
- Strong people management and team leadership skills
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Confident with stock control, cost management and basic P&L
- Working knowledge of UK health & safety and licensing regulations
- Ability to stay calm and solve problems in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and late nights
- Personal Licence holder preferred (support available to obtain one)
