About the role
We are looking for a knowledgeable and pragmatic Data Protection Advisor to assist with the delivery of a number of different privacy and data protection engagements across a wide range of sectors.
Key responsibilities
- Provide practical advice on data protection, privacy and information-governance matters.
- Support the our clients with compliance with the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and other relevant legislation.
- Review and advise on data protection impact assessments and legitimate interests assessments.
- Advise projects, services and procurement exercises on privacy by design and default.
- Coordinate or support responses to data subject rights requests within statutory deadlines.
- Assess, document and advise on suspected personal data breaches, including escalation and regulatory notification where appropriate.
- Review data-processing agreements, data-sharing arrangements and privacy-related contract clauses.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, privacy notices, guidance and compliance records.
- Help maintain records of processing activities, retention schedules and the data protection risk register.
- Design and deliver training, briefings and awareness activities.
- Monitor changes in legislation and regulatory guidance and explain their impact to relevant teams.
- Conduct compliance reviews or audits and monitor agreed actions.
- Prepare reports and management information for senior leaders and governance groups.
- Liaise with individuals, suppliers, partners and regulatory bodies when required.
About you
Essential
- Practical experience in a data protection, privacy, compliance, information-governance or closely related role.
- Good working knowledge of the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
- Experience advising colleagues/ clients on data protection risks and compliance requirements.
- Experience handling data subject rights requests, data breaches or data protection impact assessments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound professional judgement.
- The ability to explain complex requirements clearly to non-specialist audiences.
- Excellent written communication, organisation and attention to detail.
- The confidence to challenge constructively and influence client colleagues at different levels.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and sensitive matters with discretion.
Desirable
- A recognised qualification in data protection or privacy, such as CIPP/E, Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection or an equivalent qualification.
- Experience in the role of a Data Protection Officer or Data Protection Lead.
- Knowledge of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, direct marketing rules, freedom of information or records management.
- Experience reviewing contracts, data-sharing agreements or international data transfers.
- Experience delivering training or conducting compliance audits.
