East Asian Restaurant Experience & Cultural Familiarity Preferred
Formosa Izakaya is looking for a reliable, friendly and hardworking Front of House Team Member to join our restaurant in Birmingham city centre.
We are particularly interested in applicants who have familiarity with East Asian food, dining culture, languages or hospitality, as this can help us provide a more natural and knowledgeable experience for our customers. This reflects the type of familiarity discussed for the revised advert.

- This is an in-person position based at our restaurant in Birmingham; remote working is not available.

Main responsibilities
- Welcoming customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Taking food and drink orders accurately.
- Serving food and beverages.
- Explaining dishes, ingredients and menu items to customers where required.
- Clearing and preparing tables.
- Responding politely to customer enquiries.
- Supporting colleagues during busy periods.
- Helping to maintain a clean, organised and welcoming restaurant.
- Carrying out other reasonable Front of House duties when required.
What we are looking for
- Good customer-service and communication skills.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Confidence working in a busy restaurant environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends where required.
- Previous restaurant or hospitality experience is helpful but not essential.
East Asian food, language and cultural familiarity
As Formosa Izakaya serves East Asian cuisine and customers from a wide range of backgrounds, the following would be particularly useful:
- Familiarity with East Asian food, ingredients and dining culture, including Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or similar cuisines.
- Previous experience working in an East Asian restaurant or hospitality environment would be an advantage.
- Ability to speak Mandarin Chinese or another East Asian language would be helpful but is not essential.
- Confidence explaining traditional dishes, ingredients and menu items to customers.
- An understanding of East Asian dining customs, food preferences and customer-service expectations would be beneficial.
- Ability to communicate comfortably with customers and colleagues from different cultural backgrounds.
- Additional relevant language skills are welcome.
