Job Title: Senior Support Worker

At Step Forward Support Services, we are looking for a dedicated and experienced Senior Support Worker to support the day-to-day running of our 4-bed residential care home in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual who is passionate about delivering outstanding, person-centred care and supporting adults with complex needs to achieve the best possible outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you will have current experience working in a support role within learning disability or mental health settings, with experience supporting individuals with complex behaviours and forensic needs.
Strong leadership and communication skills are essential, along with current experience supporting vulnerable adults with complex needs and supervising staff.

Typical responsibilities
- Support with the day-to-day running of the home, ensuring a safe, caring, and high-quality service.
- Work as part of the staff rota, providing direct support to residents and leading by example in the delivery of high-quality care and support.
- Promote residents’ independence, wellbeing and quality of life through empowerment and meaningful engagement.
- Review care plans, identifying and reporting changes in individuals’ needs, preferences and outcomes, and ensuring support is delivered in accordance with their current care plan.
- Supervise and mentor staff through shadowing, ongoing development, and competency assessment.
- Support and facilitate staff supervision sessions, providing guidance and performance feedback to promote continuous professional development and adherence to service standards.
- Assist with the completion of rotas for the staff team, ensuring adequate staffing levels and skill mix to meet the needs of the services.
- Attend review meetings and liaise with families and professionals in the absence of the Home Manager, representing the service confidently.
- Provide clear and timely service updates to support effective communication and informed decision-making.
- Assist the Home Manager with the recruitment and onboarding of new staff, ensuring they understand their roles, responsibilities, and the standards expected within the service.
What we are looking for
- At least 2 years’ proven experience working in a residential or supported living environment with adults with complex needs and/or learning disabilities.
- Experience as a Senior Support Worker in a relevant setting, with experience of supervising staff.
- Passion for delivering and developing high standards of person-centred care, promoting independence and self-advocacy.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong understanding of confidentiality and the appropriate handling of sensitive information.
- Understanding of behaviours that may challenge and their impact on care and support delivery.
- A proactive and confident approach to supporting residents to access the community, participate in outings and activities, and pursue their interests and goals, promoting independence, choice and meaningful engagement.
