Job Description: Financial Controller

Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-orientated, analytical and commercially aware Financial Controller to oversee the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the business. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining robust financial controls, producing accurate and timely financial reporting, managing the finance function, and ensuring compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.
Working closely with the Company Directors, the Financial Controller will provide reliable financial information and practical financial advice to support informed business decisions, while helping to maintain the financial stability and continued success of the company.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
· Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual management accounts and financial reports.
· Analyse financial performance, highlighting key trends, variances and opportunities for improvement.
· Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all financial information.
Internal Controls
· Develop, maintain and monitor effective financial controls, policies and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance.
· Continually review internal processes to improve efficiency and financial governance.
Budget Support & Financial Performance
· Support the Company Directors in the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts by providing accurate financial information, analysis and reporting.
· Monitor actual performance against budgets and report significant variances, trends and potential risks.
Team Leadership
· Lead, manage and develop the finance team.
· Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and other day-to-day finance activities.
· Support Payroll function and provide cover for this process as required.
· Promote high standards of accuracy, efficiency and customer service within the finance department.
Compliance & Tax
· Prepare and coordinate annual accounts and liaise with external accountants and auditors.
· Ensure timely completion of VAT returns, corporation tax requirements and all other statutory reporting obligations.
· Maintain compliance with relevant accounting standards and financial regulations.
Cash Flow Management
· Monitor cash flow and working capital.
· Manage banking relationships and oversee treasury activities.
· Provide regular cash flow reporting and highlight any emerging financial risks.
Financial Advice & Business Support
· Provide the Company Directors with accurate financial information and advice on the financial implications of business decisions.
· Support decision-making through clear reporting and analysis, ensuring financial risks and opportunities are appropriately communicated.
Continuous Improvement
· Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems and reporting.
· Contribute to the ongoing development and efficiency of the finance function and support business improvement initiatives where appropriate.
Skills and Qualifications
Professional Qualification
Applicants must be fully qualified and hold membership of one of the following recognised UK professional bodies:
· ACA (ICAEW or ICAS)
· ACCA
· CIMA
Experience
· Minimum of five years' progressive accounting experience.
· At least two years' experience in a supervisory or management role.
· Experience within a manufacturing environment would be advantageous.
Technical Skills
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
· Strong working knowledge of accounting software such as Sage, NetSuite, SAP or similar ERP systems.
