Role: Retail Space Planner
Role Purpose
The Retail Space Planner is responsible for translating our commercial strategy into executable store layouts and fixture plans. This role ensures every store displays the right products, in the right quantities, in the right locations to maximise sales, productivity and customer experience.
Working closely with Buying, Merchandising, Retail Operations and Store Development, you will create detailed planograms, space plans and store maps that optimise category mix, bestseller visibility, stock capacity and replenishment efficiency.
This is a highly analytical role that combines commercial thinking with visual merchandising principles. Success is measured by sales productivity, execution accuracy and operational simplicity rather than aesthetics alone.
Key Responsibilities
Space Planning & Store Layouts
Create detailed planograms for every fixture across the business.
Design fixture layouts that maximise sales and customer flow.
Allocate space based on commercial performance rather than opinion.
Determine optimal category adjacencies across stores.
Plan new store layouts alongside Store Development.
Update layouts as new ranges launch throughout the year.
Commercial Fixture Planning
Determine the correct percentage allocation of each category across fixtures.
Ensure bestseller products receive appropriate visibility and space.
Allocate space according to:
Sales performance
Stock turn
Margin
Capacity
Strategic priorities
Recommend fixture changes to improve productivity.
Capacity Planning
Calculate fixture capacities for every display.
Determine:
Build accurate capacity models for new concepts.
Ensure fixtures are commercially balanced and operationally practical.
Product Placement
Decide exactly where every SKU should live within stores.
Maintain master SKU location files.
Ensure logical customer shopping journeys.
Review and improve placement based on sales data.
Store Mapping
Produce easy-to-follow store execution packs including:
The goal is that any store team can execute changes consistently and accurately.
VM Moves
Plan and communicate all visual merchandising moves including:
Seasonal updates
New product launches
Sale transitions
Promotional activity
New concept rollouts
Fixture refreshes
Produce simple execution guides with minimal ambiguity.
Cross Functional Collaboration
Work closely with:
Buying
Merchandising
Retail Operations
Store Development
Marketing
Store Managers
to ensure layouts support both commercial performance and operational efficiency.
Continuous Improvement
Analyse fixture productivity.
Identify underperforming space.
Recommend changes to improve sales per square foot.
Test new merchandising concepts.
Support trials and A/B testing of layouts.

Skills & Experience
Essential
Experience in retail space planning or commercial visual merchandising.
Strong analytical skills.
