Sanctuary Personnel is currently recruiting for experienced Senior Prison RMNs (Band 6) to join a specialist prison healthcare service in Staffordshire.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Registered Mental Health Nurse with strong clinical experience to develop their career within a secure healthcare environment. You will work as part of a compassionate, multidisciplinary team delivering recovery-focused and trauma-informed care to individuals experiencing mental health and substance misuse needs.
Two of the four vacancies are focused specifically on Early Days in Custody, providing initial screening, assessment, short-term interventions and signposting to appropriate services.
The Role
As a Senior Prison RMN, you will provide high-quality, evidence-based mental health interventions while managing an allocated caseload. You will complete assessments, coordinate care and work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and partner agencies to ensure individuals receive appropriate support.
You will support individuals from initial assessment through to discharge or transfer of care, helping them access appropriate services and develop positive outcomes both during custody and as they transition back into the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive mental health assessments, reviews and risk assessments.
- Manage an allocated caseload and coordinate care using the Care Programme Approach (CPA).
- Deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions tailored to individual needs.
- Provide specialist mental health support within a secure healthcare environment.
- Utilise approaches including CBT, motivational interviewing and counselling techniques.
- Develop and regularly review individualised care plans.
- Work collaboratively with service users, carers, healthcare professionals and external agencies.
- Coordinate onward referrals to appropriate services, including hospitals and community mental health teams.
- Support rehabilitation and recovery-focused care.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with professional standards.
- Provide clinical supervision and support to colleagues.
- Contribute to service development and continuous improvement.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team.
- Act as a reflective practitioner and promote person-centred care.
Early Days in Custody
Two of the four positions will work specifically within the Early Days in Custody function.
Responsibilities will include:
- Completing initial mental health screening and assessment.
- Identifying immediate mental health and wellbeing needs.
- Providing short-term interventions and support.
- Assessing risk and determining appropriate next steps.
- Signposting and referring individuals to specialist services for longer-term support.
- Helping ensure individuals receive timely and appropriate care during the early stages of custody.
Please note: The Early Days in Custody positions require Saturday working every other week.
Working Pattern & On-Call
For the core team positions, weekend working is now minimal, with Band 6 staff generally working weekends only 2–3 times per year.
There is also a regional on-call rota covering multiple prison sites, although this is very rarely required.
When required to work a weekend shift, staff will normally attend their substantive base but may occasionally be required to travel to another site within Staffordshire in response to an urgent service need.
Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- Current registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with the NMC.
- Evidence of recent CPD and compliance with NMC revalidation.
- Teaching qualification, including ENB 603, or an appropriate mentoring/coaching qualification.
Experience
- Significant experience working within mental health services.
- Experience delivering specialist interventions to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties.
- Experience using therapeutic approaches such as CBT, motivational interviewing and counselling techniques.
- Experience providing supervision and/or line management.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, care planning and multidisciplinary working.
