Job Summary
As a Women’s Support Worker at Al-Hurraya, you will provide gender-specific, culturally competent support to women from ethnically diverse backgrounds. You will understand that women often face unique barriers to seeking help, including deep-rooted cultural stigma, family pressures, and fears regarding community scrutiny. Your role is to provide a safe, discreet environment that allows women to address gambling harms, mental health, and social challenges without the fear of judgment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Targeted Engagement: Support and motivate women to access treatment, recognizing that traditional "public" hubs may cause high anxiety due to community visibility.
- Advocacy & Presence: Provide "hands-on" advocacy by accompanying service users to external appointments (e.g., NRN Wellbeing Hub) to bridge the gap between mainstream services and culturally specific needs.
- Cultural Competency: Increase the cultural competency of the local treatment system by highlighting the specific barriers faced by BAMER women.
- Relationship Building: Facilitate trust between services and communities who do not currently access support due to shame or stigma.
- Safe Environment: Ensure support is delivered in a discreet, culturally understanding environment to mitigate community-based stigma.
- Holistic Support: Offer practical and emotional support, addressing root causes of anxiety and helping to build internal resilience.
- To be there for service users, offering encouragement, practical and emotional support, advice and shared experience.
- Safeguarding: Flag any safeguarding concerns regarding children or vulnerable adults to a supervisor immediately.
- To provide culturally appropriate harm reduction advice and guidance
- Encourage service users to attend and engage in group sessions.
- Confidentiality: Maintain absolute service user confidentiality in line with Al-Hurraya policy.
- To act as a positive role model and support to service users and peer mentors.
- Where beneficial support people to access other services that will improve their well-being and increase their recovery capital
- To be knowledgeable about other services available within Derby which would support and further enhance service users’ recovery journeys.
- To connect with service users to identify areas of strength, skill and interest that can be harnessed into positive opportunities moving forward.
- To facilitate access to culturally appropriate mutual aid and support to maintain recovery
- To ensure that any safeguarding concerns are flagged to your supervisor immediately

- To operate and maintain record keeping and monitoring procedures as directed, ensuring that all data requirements are met in line with the Al-Hurraya Record Keeping Policy, within appropriate deadlines.

- Maintain service user confidentiality at all times in line with Al-Hurraya policy and data protection legislation.
- To carry out all work in accordance with the company and its partners’ philosophy and ethos.
- To attend staff meetings and engage in all staff support, training, development and training systems.
- Proactively improve personal knowledge and skills by completing any relevant training, as agreed in supervision.
- To keep abreast of developments in services, legislation and practice relevant to services for substance misusers.
- To attend 1-1 supervision on an ongoing basis and as required.
- To carry out risk assessments prior to client work and on an ongoing basis.
- To ensure that a representative Connector attends the different Al-Hurraya team meetings on a regular basis.
- Such other duties as the management may from time to time reasonably require.
Key Duties:
- Support service users on a 1-1 basis, working in a structured way, to help them achieve clearly defined recovery goals (identified and agreed jointly between keyworker, connector, and service user, following an appropriate referral for a Connector being made by the keyworker).
- To support the delivery of group sessions, and to lead on the delivery of peer led mutual aid groups once competent and confident to do so.
- To work alongside keyworkers to actively promote mutual aid and other service user involvement activities to service users.
- To promote mutual aid and other service user involvement activities to the wider team.
- To commit to your own recovery and be open to discussion with respect to ongoing support required to maintain it.
