Belfast Skin Clinic is a leading independent dermatology and skin surgery clinic. Due to continued growth and expansion, we are looking for an experienced Theatre Co-ordinator to lead and co-ordinate our theatre team, delivering safe, effective perioperative care to patients undergoing dermatological and skin cancer surgery.
As Theatre Co-ordinator you will provide senior clinical leadership, co-ordinate theatre lists, staff and equipment, and work alongside our Consultants as scrub or circulating nurse — including for Mohs micrographic surgery and minor operations. You will deputise for the Nurse Manager, mentor the nursing team, and help uphold our high standards as an RQIA-registered establishment.
What you'll do
● Provide senior clinical leadership and co-ordinate the theatre team, lists, equipment and staff.
● Assist Consultants during surgical procedures, acting as scrub or circulating nurse as required.
● Lead safety checks (WHO Surgical Safety Checklist / NatSSIPs) and champion infection prevention and control.
● Supervise, support and mentor theatre nursing staff, and deputise for the Nurse Manager in their absence.
● Provide flexible support to the Treatment Room team as required.
What we're looking for
● Registered General Nurse on the live NMC register with current revalidation.
● At least 3 years' post-registration theatre experience, including a senior scrub/circulating role.
● A genuine interest in dermatology, plastic surgery and vascular surgery.
● Strong leadership, organisation and communication skills, with the ability to lead a team during theatre lists.
Desirable
● Experience in the independent sector or an RQIA-registered establishment; a previous team lead, senior staff nurse or sister role.
● Experience in Mohs micrographic surgery, mole scanning, minor operations and post-operative wound care.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Theatre Co-ordinator provides senior clinical leadership and co-ordination of the theatre team, ensuring the safe, effective and efficient delivery of perioperative services at Belfast Skin Clinic. The postholder acts as a senior clinical resource and role model, supports the Nurse Manager with the day-to-day running of the theatre nursing team, and deputises in their absence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide senior clinical leadership and ensure effective use of theatre slots, equipment and staff.
- Assist the Nurse Manager with delegated management tasks, including rotas, nursing allocation and skill-mix planning.
- Supervise, support and mentor theatre nursing staff, including induction, competency assessment and training needs.
- Deputise for the Nurse Manager and act as a point of escalation and clinical decision-making support during lists.
- Assist Consultants during surgical procedures - including skin cancer surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery and minor operations - as scrub or circulating nurse.
- Lead team briefing, sign-in, time-out and sign-out safety checks in line with the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist / NatSSIPs.
- Recognise and respond to the deteriorating patient, anaphylaxis and perioperative emergencies, leading the immediate clinical response.
- Lead and support infection prevention and control, aseptic technique, decontamination and safe waste management.
- Manage medicines, equipment, stock and safety checks safely and cost-effectively.
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records and support safeguarding, information governance and health and safety.
- Provide flexible support to the Treatment Room and the Treatment Room Co-ordinator as required, including dressings, suture removal and wound care in line with NICE NG125.
- Support audit, quality improvement, appraisal and the clinic's clinical governance framework.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Registered General Nurse on the live NMC register with current revalidation.
- At least 3 years' post-registration experience in theatres, including a senior scrub/circulating role.
- Clinical skills relevant to the speciality with a genuine interest in dermatology, plastic surgery and vascular surgery; sound aseptic technique; accurate record keeping.
- Ability to co-ordinate staff, manage theatre flow, prioritise, delegate and deputise for the Nurse Manager.
- Working knowledge of the NMC Code and understanding of infection prevention and control, consent and safeguarding.
- Excellent communication; well organised; collaborative team leader; able to use own initiative.
DESIRABLE
- Experience in the independent sector or an RQIA-registered establishment; prior team lead, senior staff nurse or sister role.
- Mohs micrographic surgery, mole scanning, topical dermatological treatments, minor operations, post-operative wound care, Doppler assessment and compression bandaging.
- Familiarity with RQIA standards, NICE and BAD/BSDS guidance; IT skills including computerised patient records.
CONDITIONS
- Subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including Enhanced AccessNI disclosure, verification of live NMC registration, references and occupational health clearance.
- Full-time. This is a guide and may be reviewed by management in consultation with the postholder.
