Role Overview
The Head Greenkeeper is responsible for the overall maintenance, presentation, and playability of the golf course and associated grounds. This role ensures that the course meets the high standards expected by a private members club, delivering an excellent playing experience year-round while managing staff, resources, and budgets effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Course Maintenance & Presentation
- Oversee all aspects of golf course maintenance, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and rough.
- Ensure consistent, high-quality playing surfaces in line with club expectations.
- Develop and implement agronomic plans, including mowing, irrigation, fertilisation, and pest/disease control.
Team Leadership
- Lead, manage, and motivate the greenkeeping team.
- Plan daily, weekly, and seasonal work schedules.
- Provide training, mentoring, and performance management for staff.
Machinery & Equipment
- Oversee the maintenance, servicing, and replacement planning of all machinery and equipment.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of all tools and vehicles.
Budget & Resource Management
- Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget.
- Monitor expenditure and ensure cost-effective use of resources.
- Source and manage suppliers, contractors, and materials.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all health & safety regulations.
- Maintain safe working practices across the department.
- Manage environmental responsibilities, including sustainability initiatives.
Course Development
- Work with the club management and committees on course improvements and long-term development plans.
- Implement renovation projects where required.
Key Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as a Head Greenkeeper or Deputy at a high-quality golf facility.
- Strong agronomic knowledge and turf management expertise.
- Leadership and team management experience.
- Knowledge of modern greenkeeping machinery and irrigation systems.
- Budget management and planning skills.
- Relevant qualifications in turf management (e.g., NVQ, HND, or equivalent).
- PA1, PA2, PA6 spraying certificates.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
