Job Purpose:
To provide practical support, emotional reassurance, and benefits advice to visually impaired people and their families, enabling them to maintain independence and improve quality of life. The role is primarily community-based, with a focus on domiciliary visits.
Key Tasks:
- Client Support & Visits
- Visit newly referred clients and provide ongoing support tailored to individual needs.
- Offer reassurance, empathy, and guidance to those experiencing emotional distress related to sight loss.
- Advise on facilities, resources, and equipment to support independent living.
- Benefits Advice & Advocacy
- Provide advice, carry out benefits checks, and support clients with benefit applications.
- Help clients and carers maximise financial support available to them.
- Build strong links with social services, health professionals, and other agencies.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers and colleagues to deliver holistic support.
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions and outcomes.
- Submit reports and update the Chief Executive on developments.
- Uphold the values and reputation of the Society.
- Cover colleagues’ caseloads when required.
- Undertake training and development to remain up to date in relevant areas.
Person specification
Essential:
Excellent listening and communication skills.
Empathy, patience, and ability to support people through challenging times.
Organisational skills and ability to manage a caseload.
Willingness to travel across the designated area.
Desirable:
Experience in advice, benefits support, or social care.
Knowledge of issues facing visually impaired people (training provided).
