Main purpose of the role:
Lead a High-Performing Automotive Operation
We are seeking an experienced, driven, and people-focused Workshop & Bodyshop Operations Duty Manager to join our fast-paced automotive refurbishment operation.
This is a pivotal leadership role with responsibility for the performance, productivity, quality, and engagement of a large, multi-skilled workshop team. You'll lead Team Leaders, Senior Cosmetic Vehicle Technicians, Vehicle Painters, Preppers & Polishers, Mechanical Technicians, and a network of specialist subcontract repairers, ensuring vehicles are repaired safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.
Reporting directly to the Centre Manager, you will play a key role in driving operational excellence, achieving business targets, and creating a culture of accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
As a member of the site leadership team, you will also act as a Duty Manager, deputising for the Centre Manager when required and providing leadership across the wider operation.

What You'll Be Doing
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, inspire, and develop a large multi-skilled team across workshop and bodyshop operations.
- Create a high-performance culture focused on safety, quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
- Manage the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, development, succession planning, and employee engagement.
- Conduct regular one-to-ones, performance reviews, and coaching sessions to support individual and team growth.
- Effectively manage attendance, disciplinary, and grievance processes in line with company policies.
- Ensure effective workforce planning and resource allocation to meet operational demand.
- Clearly communicate business objectives, performance expectations, and site priorities.
Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the workshop and bodyshop operations.
- Take ownership of production performance, ensuring repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and to agreed quality standards.
- Manage throughput, work in progress (WIP), and productivity to maximise operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Monitor and improve KPIs relating to productivity, quality, turnaround times, and cost control.
- Identify operational challenges and implement sustainable improvement plans.
- Work closely with the Centre Manager and VE Team to achieve performance targets and business objectives.
- Collaborate with support functions and wider operational teams to optimise site performance.
Duty Management
- Deputise for the Centre Manager and fellow Duty Managers when required.
- Support the overall operational performance of the site and contribute to wider business initiatives.
- Resolve internal and external stakeholder queries and escalations professionally and effectively.
- Provide leadership support across departments during periods of operational demand.
- Share responsibility for site governance, security, compliance, and company standards.
Commercial & Financial Performance
- Support the delivery of site budgets and financial objectives.
- Monitor labour productivity, operational costs, and profitability.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and maximise performance.
- Ensure repairs are delivered within agreed quality, speed, and cost parameters.
- Contribute to forecasting, planning, and resource management activities.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Champion a positive health, safety, and wellbeing culture across the site.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and reviews to maintain operational standards.
- Support ISO compliance and security requirements.
- Ensure adherence to Working Time Directive regulations and employment legislation.
Reporting & Stakeholder Management
- Produce and analyse operational reports, KPI data, and performance metrics.
- Provide clear updates and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Develop strong relationships with Operations, HR, Recruitment, and other key stakeholders.
- Use performance insights to support decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
About You
We're looking for a hands-on leader with a proven track record of delivering results in a busy workshop, bodyshop, or vehicle refurbishment environment.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years' management experience within a large-scale workshop, bodyshop, vehicle refurbishment, or similar automotive environment.
- Previous hands-on workshop or bodyshop experience.
- Strong understanding of vehicle repair and refurbishment operations.
- Demonstrable experience leading, motivating, and developing high-performing teams.
- Proven ability to drive productivity, quality, and operational performance.
- Excellent organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Confident using Microsoft Office, including Outlook and Excel.
Desirable
- Experience managing budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, or similar operational excellence methodologies.
- Experience within a high-volume automotive refurbishment environment.
- Understanding of ISO standards and operational compliance frameworks.
