The Courses
The Hotchkin Course
The Hotchkin is one of the world's great heathland golf courses. Originally developed in the early 20th century and recently restored by renowned architect Tom Doak, it is famous for its dramatic bunkering, heather-lined fairways, strategic design and exceptional conditioning. The course consistently features in rankings of the world's finest layouts.
The Bracken Course
Designed by celebrated architect Donald Steel and opened in 1998, the Bracken Course provides a superb complement to the Hotchkin. Routed through woodland and open countryside, it offers wider fairways and larger greens while still presenting a strategic challenge for golfers of all abilities.
Role Overview
To maintain championship-level playing surfaces and support the delivery of exceptional course conditions year-round. Assistant greenkeepers will work closely with the Courses Director and Head greenkeepers uphold the standards expected of a Woodhall Spa, The national Golf Centre.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for professional development within an elite turf management environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily preparation and presentation of all playing surfaces, including greens, tees, fairways, surrounds, and bunkers
- Perform mowing, rolling, verticutting, aeration, topdressing, and turf renovation practices to championship standards
- Support the implementation of agronomic programmes, including fertiliser and plant protection applications
- Assist with irrigation system operation, hand-watering, and moisture management
- Prepare the course for tournaments, member events, and major championships
- Operate and maintain a wide range of modern turf maintenance machinery safely and efficiently
- Monitor turf health, pests, diseases, and playing conditions, reporting issues to senior staff
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices
- Uphold the club’s presentation standards, professionalism, and attention to detail
Qualifications Required
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent) preferred
- PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates desirable
- Chainsaw, irrigation, or first aid certifications advantageous
- Willingness to work toward further industry qualifications
Experience Required
- Minimum of 1–3 years’ experience in greenkeeping or sports turf maintenance
- Experience working at a high-quality golf course or elite sports turf facility preferred
- Exposure to fine turf maintenance practices, particularly on greens and tees
- Tournament or championship preparation experience beneficial
Pay: £13.12-£13.69 per hour
