About the Role
Environmental health work sits where public safety, regulation, business activity, and everyday living conditions meet. A single day can involve reviewing food hygiene standards, investigating a public complaint, assessing a workplace risk, or following up on an environmental issue that requires formal action.
As an Environmental Health Officer, you will carry out inspections, investigations, assessments, and advisory work designed to protect public health and ensure businesses and premises meet relevant regulatory standards.
The position combines field-based inspections with evidence gathering, report writing, and practical problem solving. You may spend part of the day visiting commercial premises, then return to review documentation, prepare an enforcement report, or advise an operator on corrective actions needed to meet required standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out environmental health inspections across commercial and public premises.
- Assess compliance with relevant food hygiene, health and safety, and environmental requirements.
- Investigate complaints relating to public health, environmental conditions, or regulated premises.
- Conduct food hygiene inspections and review food safety management procedures where required.
- Identify hazards and determine appropriate corrective or enforcement action.
- Prepare clear inspection reports, notices, correspondence, and case documentation.
- Investigate suspected foodborne illness or other public-health concerns.
- Support monitoring of environmental pollution and nuisance complaints.
- Review workplace health and safety arrangements within relevant premises.
- Collect evidence, photographs, statements, and other information during investigations.
- Provide businesses with practical guidance on meeting statutory requirements.
- Monitor completion of corrective actions following inspections.
- Maintain accurate electronic case and inspection records.
- Assist with environmental permitting and regulated-process monitoring where required.
- Participate in targeted inspection or public-health programmes.
- Liaise with laboratories, businesses, residents, partner agencies, and other regulatory bodies.
- Prepare evidence and documentation for formal enforcement proceedings when necessary.
- Support responses to urgent environmental or public-health incidents.
- Analyse recurring compliance issues and identify areas requiring additional intervention.
- Keep knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and enforcement procedures current.
What We Are Looking For
- Degree or recognised professional qualification in Environmental Health or a closely related discipline.
- Previous experience in environmental health, regulatory services, food safety, public protection, or a similar field is preferred.
- Knowledge of relevant UK and Welsh environmental health legislation.
- Experience carrying out inspections or structured compliance assessments would be advantageous.
- Ability to interpret regulations and explain requirements clearly to businesses and members of the public.
- Strong investigation and evidence-gathering skills.
- Good written communication skills for preparing reports and formal correspondence.
- Ability to manage several cases and inspection deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail when maintaining regulatory records.
- Confidence dealing professionally with challenging or disputed situations.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and electronic case-management systems.
- A valid driving licence may be advantageous where regular site inspections are required.

Pay: £2,600.00-£3,000.00 per month
