The Laboratory Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the technical and operational oversight of laboratory services to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality results are delivered in an effective and efficient manner. The Laboratory Assistant Manager works closely with the Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director to coordinate daily laboratory operations, supervise staff, and ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
This position assists in the implementation of laboratory policies, procedures, and quality systems aligned with organizational goals, patient safety requirements, and service excellence standards.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director in overseeing daily laboratory operations to ensure efficient workflow, timely processing, testing, and reporting of results.
Support the implementation and monitoring of laboratory policies and procedures to ensure personnel competency in all phases of testing (pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical).
Provide supervision, guidance, coaching, and support to laboratory staff to maintain ongoing competency and adherence to established procedures.
Identify staff training needs and coordinate remedial training or continuing education programs for laboratory personnel as required.
Ensure that approved procedure manuals and standard operating procedures are readily available, current, and consistently followed by all laboratory staff.
Assist in coordinating daily staffing schedules and workforce planning to meet operational service demands.
Monitor laboratory workflow and productivity to ensure timely and accurate service delivery.
Maintain effective working relationships with referral laboratories regarding specimen handling, testing coordination, and results reporting.
Assist in monitoring laboratory inventory, reagents, and supplies to ensure adequate stock levels and minimize service disruptions.
Support the investigation and resolution of laboratory billing inquiries in coordination with the appropriate departments.
Collaborate with IT personnel to ensure proper functionality and utilization of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other laboratory-related software and equipment.
Monitor quality control and quality assurance activities and promptly report deviations, trends, or issues to the Laboratory Manager or Director.
Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards and promote a safe laboratory environment for staff and patients.
Support and enforce policies related to confidentiality, data protection, and the handling of Protected Health Information (PHI).
Assist in ensuring adherence to all regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements applicable to laboratory services.
Participate in internal and external audits, inspections, and accreditation activities as required.
Act as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) in the absence of the Laboratory Manager, when delegated.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director.
Qualifications – Essential
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
Must be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council (Bermuda) or eligible for registration.
Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology International (ASCPi) is required or strongly preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
Demonstrated experience in laboratory operations, quality management, and staff supervision.
Supervisory or Management Certificate or willingness to obtain within a specified period.

Attends laboratory meetings and assists in documenting meeting minutes when required.
