Salary: Support Staff Pay Scale D: £25,583 to £25,989 per annum
Full Time: 37 hours per week on Monday to Friday. Working pattern can be discussed at interview.

Great Yarmouth Primary Academy is looking for a reliable and conscientious Caretaker to join our team. This is a varied and important role where no two days are necessarily the same. From keeping our buildings and grounds well maintained, to ensuring the academy is secure and ready for students and staff each day, you’ll play a key part in the smooth running of our school.
You’ll be someone who takes pride in their work, is confident using their practical skills and can use their initiative to deal with the everyday challenges that come with looking after a busy academy. In return, you’ll become an important member of the academy team, helping to provide an environment where our students can feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
Within this the hours of attendance for work will be determined by the needs of the academy and undertaken by agreement with the principal. Key holder responsibilities may extend beyond regular working hours from time to time. This position is on a 52-week contract with the flexibility of booking annual leave in school holidays.
What You’ll Be Doing:
As Caretaker at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy, you will play an important role in ensuring our academy is safe, secure, well-maintained and ready for students, staff and visitors each day.
Working under the direction of the Site Manager and Principal, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the academy premises. Your responsibilities will include maintaining the security of the site, carrying out general maintenance and repairs, monitoring the condition of the premises and supporting the cleaning and upkeep of both internal and external areas.
You will be responsible for opening and securing the academy, operating fire and burglar alarm systems and responding to emergencies when required. You will also monitor heating, lighting, plumbing and other utility systems, helping to ensure that the academy provides a safe, comfortable environment that supports teaching and learning.
The role will involve a varied range of practical duties, including minor repairs, painting and decorating, moving furniture and equipment, maintaining outside areas, clearing drains and gullies, replenishing sanitary supplies and helping with general cleaning and housekeeping. You will also support the Site Manager in monitoring cleaning contractors and supervising authorised contractors working on site.
You may also be required to support academy lettings, including opening and securing the site, monitoring activities and acting as an emergency point of contact. There may also be opportunities to drive the academy minibus when required.
The role includes key holder responsibilities, and you may occasionally be required to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours. Any additional attendance will be agreed with the Principal and determined by the needs of the academy.
- Be responsible for the security of the premises and its contents including the operation of fire and burglar alarms and undertaking key holder responsibilities, involving locking/unlocking entrances, checking and securing windows and internal doors, activating and switching off alarm systems, etc.
- Ensure that all utility related systems such as heating, lighting, plumbing and power are working properly.
- Help maintain and operate plant and equipment, according to the manufacturer's manual where appropriate
- Be responsible for the sanitary conditions, undertake internal decoration and outside duties such as clearance of drains and general tidying
- Be fully aware of and comply with all departmental instructions and procedures relating to health and safety at work and to recognise the responsibilities required under the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974.
- Be available to work or answer emergencies outside of regular working hours and pre-planned lettings as required
About You:
We are looking for a practical, reliable and conscientious individual who takes pride in maintaining a safe, welcoming and well-presented environment.
You will have good DIY and practical maintenance skills, together with a sound understanding of health and safety requirements. You will be able to organise your own workload, use your initiative and prioritise tasks effectively, while also being comfortable working as part of a wider team.
The role requires someone who is approachable and able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including staff, students, parents, visitors, contractors and community users. You will need to be willing to undertake training and development as required and have the flexibility to respond to the varied demands of working within a busy academy environment.
You should also be physically able to undertake the practical aspects of the role, including lifting, carrying and moving equipment and furniture.
Essential:
- Good practical and DIY skills, with the ability to undertake minor repairs and general maintenance. Understanding of health and safety requirements within an education environment, including COSHH.
- Ability to manage your own time effectively, demonstrate initiative and prioritise your workload.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to undertake the physical requirements of the role, including lifting, carrying and moving equipment.
- Ability to carry out basic administrative tasks, including record keeping, ordering and stock taking.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- A conscientious and logical approach to a varied range of tasks, with a commitment to maintaining the smooth running of the academy.
Desirable:
- GCSE English and Maths, or equivalent.
- Category D1 driving licence.
- Previous experience working in a similar role within an education setting.
