Overview
We are seeking a capable and detail-oriented Assistant Management Accountant to support the finance function within a college environment. This role will involve contributing to management accounts, budgeting, financial reporting, and higher education-specific finance processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial information.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
Management Accounts & Reporting
- Prepare and post monthly journals (accruals, prepayments, payroll, depreciation)
- Produce monthly management information packs, including variance analysis and commentary on income and expenditure against budget
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in the annual budget-setting process
- Support the preparation and updating of forecasts
- Liaise with academic departments and budget holders
Audit & Compliance
- Support internal and external audits
- Ensure compliance with HE/FE SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) and financial regulations
Financial Systems
- Maintain financial systems (e.g. Sun Systems, Oracle, Sage)
- Ensure data integrity and accuracy within finance systems
ESFA / ILR / Funding
- Support and manage ESFA funding processes, including funding claims
- Ensure Individualised Learner Record (ILR) data is accurate and compliant with ESFA funding rules
OfS Reporting
- Contribute to OfS financial returns and TRAC reporting requirements
Student Finance & SLC
- Reconcile tuition fee income against SLC payments
- Support management of student debt and fee distributions
- Liaise with Student Finance teams where required
Student Fees & Income
- Reconcile student fee income (tuition and accommodation)
- Ensure accurate income recognition in the accounts
Student Financial Support
- Assist with recording scholarships, bursaries, and hardship fund payments
Person Specification
- Part-qualified or working towards a professional accounting qualification (e.g. ACCA/CIMA)
- Previous experience in a management accounting environment
- Experience within education or public sector is desirable
Skills & Competencies
- Strong Excel skills (e.g. pivot tables, VLOOKUPs)
- Experience with ERP/financial systems (e.g. Sun Systems, Oracle, Sage)
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Good attention to detail and organisational skills
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders
