Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Steel Fabrication / Workshop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our fabrication workshop. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing production, supervising workshop personnel, maintaining quality standards, ensuring health and safety compliance, and delivering projects on time and within budget.
The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes, and a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Production Management
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate daily workshop operations.
- Ensure fabrication projects are completed on time, within budget, and to specification.
- Monitor production progress and adjust schedules as required.
- Allocate labour, equipment, and materials efficiently.
Team Leadership
- Lead, supervise, and develop workshop employees.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching and training.
- Manage staffing requirements, including recruitment and onboarding.
Quality Control
- Ensure all fabricated products meet customer specifications and quality standards.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance procedures.
- Inspect completed work before dispatch.
- Resolve production and quality issues promptly.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.
- Conduct regular toolbox talks and safety inspections.
- Ensure all employees use appropriate PPE.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
Inventory & Equipment Management
- Monitor stock levels of steel, consumables, and workshop supplies.
- Coordinate purchasing requirements with procurement.
- Ensure machinery and equipment are properly maintained.
- Minimise downtime through preventative maintenance planning.
Customer & Project Coordination
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, and clients regarding fabrication requirements.
- Review fabrication drawings and resolve production challenges.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase productivity and reduce waste.
Preferred Skills
- Experience managing large fabrication projects.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification (preferred).
- Welding inspection or quality assurance experience.
