Role Overview
The Buyer - Labels & Ingredients is responsible for the sourcing, procurement,
and supplier management of all labels and ingredient materials required for
production at the Penston site.
The role ensures continuous supply to meet production and customer demand,
while delivering cost efficiency, compliance with food safety and retailer
standards, and robust supplier performance.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining material availability, supporting
NPD and promotional changes, and ensuring full traceability across the supply
chain
Key Responsibilities
1. Procurement & Sourcing
Source and purchase labels & ingredients, and related consumables in line with
site demand
Raise and manage purchase orders in ERP/MRP systems
Monitor supplier lead times and ensure timely delivery to support production
schedules
Support tendering, supplier selection, and cost benchmarking activities
2. Supplier Management
Build and maintain strong relationships with label and ingredient suppliers
Monitor supplier performance (OTIF, quality, responsiveness)
Resolve supply issues, shortages, and quality concerns promptly
Support supplier audits and ensure alignment with ABP and retailer standard
3. Material Availability & Planning
Work closely with planning, production, and stores teams to ensure uninterrupted
supply
Monitor stock levels and consumption trends to prevent shortages or excess
Support forecasting and demand planning for labels (including promotional and
seasonal changes)
Manage risks and contingency plans for critical materials
4. Cost Control & Continuous Improvement
Deliver cost savings through negotiation, value engineering, and supplier optimisation
Identify opportunities to improve specifications, formats, or supply routes
Support continuous improvement initiatives across procurement and supply chain
processes
5. Compliance & Traceability
Ensure all purchased materials meet BRCGS, food safety, and retailer requirements
Maintain accurate documentation and traceability records
Support internal and external audits with procurement and supplier data
Ensure correct labelling, ingredient traceability, and documentation standards are
maintained
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Packaging Development, Technical, NPD, Operations, and
Commercial teams
Support label artwork changes and launches with timely procurement
Contribute to project delivery (e.g., new product launches, supplier changes,
sustainability initiatives)
